Sybase ITV New Media Products First to Achieve ISO 9000 Compliance

ISO 9001/TICKIT CERTIFICATION MAKES SYBASE THE FIRST COMPANY TO ACHIEVE THE
MOST STRINGENT LEVEL OF QUALITY FOR INTERACTIVE TELEVISION SOFTWARE
PRODUCTS

EMERYVILLE, CA, June 5, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that Sybases New Media products are the first
multimedia software products of any independent software vendor in the
United States to achieve the most stringent level of ISO 9000-compliance.
The International Organization of Standards (ISO) is an internationally
recognized organization which measures a companys ability to implement
repeatable quality processes, ensuring customers a high level of quality
and consistency of products and services worldwide.

Sybase has been awarded ISO 9001/TickIT certification for the design,
development and support of Gain Momentum, and Gain Interplay, the
multimedia products of choice in several interactive television trials,
including Bell South, Southern New England Telephone (SNET), Singapore
Telecom and ICTV for use in the Cox Cable trial. Sybase was awarded ISO
9001/TickIT certification for all five Gain product development and
management groups. They include engineering, quality assurance, technical
publications, technical support and customer service.

Increasingly, companies in industries such as telecommunications, are
requiring software companies to be ISO compliant, and we are the only
independent software vendor providing ITV-capable multimedia products that
are ISO certified, said Russ Werner, vice president and general manager,
new media division, Sybase, Inc. ISO certification is an important measure
of a company's ability to meet the highest quality standards possible.

Gain Momentum is a powerful, object-oriented, networked multimedia
authoring environment for developing visual, intuitive, and entertaining
applications. In addition, Gain Momentum authored applications can access
and manipulate data from SYBASE and other databases, allowing customers to
integrate multimedia applications with their existing and future business
systems. Gain Interplay is a software player that is designed to allow
interactive multimedia applications to be played on low-cost, low-memory,
hardware devices such as television set-top boxes, personal digital
assistants (PDAs) and home personal computers.

Sybase became one of the first major software vendors to earn ISO
9001/TickIT certification the United States last January when the company
was awarded ISO 9001/TickIT certification for three of its engineering
groups Navigation Server, Replication Server, and Enterprise Connect and
for its customer service and support operations. The certification audits
were performed by the London-based Bureau Veritas Quality International
(BVQI) registrar in September and November 1994. BVQI audits for Gain
Momentum and Gain Interplay were completed in March 1995.

Combined with the ISO 9002 certification of its European operations and
previously announced certification of its manufacturing and logistics
groups, Sybase believes that it is the most ISO 9000-compliant independent
U.S. software vendor. For customers, Sybase believes that ISO compliance
provides a high level of quality and consistency of its products and
services worldwide.

ISO 9000

ISO 9000 is an internationally recognized quality standard that measures
the degree to which an organization has instituted consistent, repeatable
quality processes. ISO 9000 is widely used in Europe where it helps to
ensure consistency of products and services produced by companies in
different countries. It's becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. where
telecommunications companies, governmental agencies, and others use it to
judge a vendor's commitment to quality. More than 40,000 companies in 90
countries have adopted the ISO 9000 standards.

The ISO 9000 series consists of three standards: ISO 9001, 9002, and 9003.
The only difference between the three is scope. ISO 9001 is the most
comprehensive, covering the entire range of activity within an enterprise.
ISO 9002 is similar to 9001 except that software design and development
are omitted. ISO 9003 focuses only on final inspection and test.

SYBASE'S COMMITMENT

To date, Sybase has invested more than $1 million in ISO 9000-related
efforts and more than half of the company's worldwide development,
manufacturing, order management and customer support operations have been
ISO 9000 certified. The company expects to have 95 percent of its
operations ISO 9000-compliant by the end of 1995.

Perhaps most important is Sybase's ISO 9001/TickIT certification. 'TickIT'
refers to British software quality standards sponsored by the U.K.
Department of Trade (DTI) and the Computing Services Association (CSA),
and which are maintained by the DISC TickIT Office in London.

PUTTING ISO TO WORK

An example of ISO 9000 in action is the way it has helped Sybase's customer
service and support operations. "ISO is a concrete set of standards that
helps us provide better, more consistent service to our customers," said
Lou Muggeo, vice president of technical support operations for Sybase.
"The standardization mandated by ISO 9000 has helped us create a uniform
service and support operation around the world. This gives our customers
especially multinational corporations a look, feel and quality of service
from Sybase that is nearly identical no matter where the customer site is.
We believe that this gives us a leg up on competitors who are still
wrangling with consistency of service around the globe."

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION

The International Standardization Organization (ISO) was founded in 1946 to
develop a common set of manufacturing, trade, and communication standards.
The organization is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is composed of 91
member countries. The United States member organization is the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI). All standards developed by the ISO
are voluntary; no legal requirements force countries to adopt them.
