STORAGETEK SEES NO INFRINGEMENT

LOUISVILLE, Colo.--Storage Technology Corp. (NYSE:STK) said today that it
does not believe any of the company's products infringe on the U.S. patent
mentioned in a patent-infringement lawsuit filed against the company a
week ago by Odetics Inc.

StorageTek has a strong portfolio of patents covering its market-leading
Nearline automated tape library systems, including the ACS 4400,
PowderHorn and WolfCreek products. The lawsuit appears to challenge the
way StorageTek libraries pass tape cartridges from one library to another
via StorageTek's patented Pass-Thru Port. However, the Odetics patent
cited in the suit does not appear to cover the Pass-Thru Port.

"This is one small feature in a large, complex product, but we see no
infringement in our initial analysis of the lawsuit," said Ryal R. Poppa,
StorageTek chairman, president and chief executive officer. "The notion
put forth in the Odetics news release that StorageTek customers should pay
a licensing fee to Odetics is spurious and offensive.

"The suit was filed without any prior discussion with StorageTek," said
Poppa. "It was a complete ambush and appears to be another effort to
exploit the success of our library systems. It is inconceivable that
Odetics would suddenly discover an alleged infringement after our product
has been in the market since 1988."

Odetics, based in Anaheim, Calif., filed the patent infringement lawsuit
against StorageTek and three of its customers on June 29 in U.S. District
Court in the Eastern District of Virginia. A news release announcing the
lawsuit was issued by Odetics seven days later on July 6.

Storage Technology Corp. designs, manufactures, markets and services,
worldwide, information storage and retrieval subsystems for enterprisewide

billion in its fiscal year ended Dec. 30, 1994. Information on StorageTek
