FREE SPICE Newsletter Discusses Power Electronics

The Intusoft Newsletter is a unique FREE publication dedicated to
discussing the SPICE circuit simulation program and its usage. The June
1995 issue contains information on simulating magnetics and switched mode
power supply designs, as well as announcements on several new analog and
mixed signal products.

The first article discusses simulating nonlinear magnetics with IsSpice.
Two models are offered; one based on SPICE 2G and a second that uses
IsSpice analog behavioral extensions. Example netlists of each magnetic
core topology are provided along with an example Royer oscillator circuit.
Both models are much easier to use than those found in other SPICE
programs. The popular Jiles-Atherton magnetics model, used in some SPICE
programs, requires parameters that are not easy to find and are difficult
to calculate. In contrast, the Intusoft model accepts commonly available
electrical or physical parameters available directly off manufacturer's
data sheets. The models accurately simulate nonlinear core behavior
including saturation, hysteresis, and eddy current losses.

The newsletter also introduces a new IsSpice library for Power Supply
Designer's. In addition to the core models the library contains switching
level models of various PWM ICs. By way of example, the magnetic cores and
the Unitrode UC1843 PWM IC are used in a forward converter to provide a
realistic SMPS simulation.

Another article introduces Intusoft's keyless network version of its
popular ICAP/4 package. Virtually all commercial SPICE programs require a
hardware protection key (dongle). The new ICAP/4 version alleviates this
nuisance. The software is licensed for a specific number of copies that
"float" on your network. Special metering software on the server
alleviates the need for a key on the client stations. With this new
product Intusoft becomes the only major CAE tool vendor selling a version
of Berkeley SPICE 3 without a copy protection key.

A floppy disk containing all of the schematics and SPICE models in the
newsletter along with new 555 Timer models from SGS-Thomson, new Maxim
op-amps and comparators, and new power MOSFET models from Siliconix are
available for a nominal fee.

The Intusoft Newsletter is the only regularly scheduled publication
dedicated to SPICE modeling and analog circuit simulation. An electronic
version (Replica document) of the Intusoft Newsletter is posted on
CompuServe (CADD/CAM/CAE Vendor Forum) and the Internet
(ftp.iee.ufrgs.br). The peak newsletter circulation is currently at 34,000
readers in over 110 countries.
