BANYAN SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES ENTERPRISE BACKUP AND RESTORE (EBR) 1.0 FOR VINES

EBR 1.0 Lowers Costs and Protects Data Across the Enterprise

WESTBORO, MA -- June 26, 1995 -- Banyan Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:BNYN)
today introduced Enterprise Backup and Restore (EBR) 1.0 for VINES, a
full-featured, cost-efficient solution that enables users to administer
system and data backups from anywhere in the enterprise. EBR lowers the
cost of completing backup and restore tasks by providing an automated,
network-based approach to managing data backup and restore activities in
VINES environments. Residing on a server with an attached tape drive, the
EBR Service can backup any workstation or server in the network that is
equipped with the appropriate EBR agent software. EBR eliminates the need
for a dedicated server to protect enterprise data and can be administered
from a simple Windows-based administrator's GUI.

System administrators and end users need a quick and easy way to manage
their services and data, said Jeff Liotta, Director and General Manager,
Management Business Unit. With EBR our customers now have the power to
efficiently backup multiple systems simultaneously. In addition, EBR's
integration with Legato's NetWorker product provides a heterogeneous
solution for the enterprise.

Automatic Backups

Time and expenses can be saved by using EBR to administer automatic backups
from any networked location. From a single seat on the network,
administrators can schedule either full or incremental backups to occur
automatically at any time of the day, any day of the week. By tailoring
backup schedules and levels of backup to meet the specific needs of a
given user group, administrators can reduce network traffic. In addition,
EBR allows hot backups and recoveries that can be accomplished without
shutting the system down, further enhancing end-user productivity.

Improved Data Management For Everyone

Point-and-click icons are incorporated into EBR's Windows PC workstation
Graphical User Interface (GUI), allowing end users to backup, archive,
browse and restore their own files without the assistance of an
administrator. System administrators can easily view disk volumes,
directories and files as they existed previously in time. Entire hard
disks or single files can be browsed and quickly recovered. The system
administrator can also select from multiple versions of directories or
files created and backed up over a span of time.

Over the next sixty days, EBR will provide support for jukebox devices from
vendors such as Exabyte, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard Company. Banyan's EBR
jukebox option will enable hands-free backups with multiple tapes. The
jukeboxes automatically change tapes at any hour, reducing the need for
administrative staff.

Banyan enables businesses and government organizations to confidently
manage information through its Distributed Enterprise Management
Architecture (DeMarc), a network-based strategy for distributing
collection and storage of management data enterprise-wide. In keeping with
the DeMarc philosophy, EBR provides a PC-based, nomadic, single seat of
administration for all backup needs. DeMarc increases customers future
options, protects existing investments and establishes a reliable
framework for growth.

EBR, based on Legato Systems, Inc.'s NetWorker backup and recovery systems,
provides a rich set of proven capabilities. Compatible with NetWorker 4.02
and 4.1, EBR further increases management options, providing a truly
heterogeneous solution.
