Kindercare Installs 4,000 Apple Macintosh Performas in Child Care Centers
To Promote Computer Learning

Cupertino, CA--July 24, 1995--In an effort to provide preschool children a
head-start on their education, KinderCare Learning Centers, Inc. has
become the first major child care provider in the U.S. to offer an
integrated computer learning program at its facilities. KinderCare
instituted the "MacPlay To Learn" program early this year and selected the
Macintosh Performa to be a key element in its commitment to technology
education. With the recent purchase and installation of 4,000 Performa
computers, KinderCare now provides computer instruction for children in
nearly half of its 1,138 child care centers nationwide.

"The Macintosh Performa is so easy to use that our three-year-olds feel
comfortable with them right away. Since there's not a learning curve to
master, children lose no time at the computer doing what comes natural to
them -- learning through play," explains Dr. Sandra Scarr, chairman of the
board and chief executive officer of KinderCare. "We found that as
children are having fun with some of the best learning software available,
they are also being challenged to develop at their own pace. The time they
spend at the computer actually helps them develop the skills necessary to
begin school, giving them a head start on their formal education."

KinderCare believes that by offering the highest caliber of computer
instruction possible, preschoolers will be better prepared to start formal
schooling "ready to learn." As part of the MacPlay to Learn program,
Macintosh Performa systems are located in each classroom and children of
different age groups -- from three to 12 years old -- spend time on them.
"Preschool children learn best on a discovery basis," notes Dr. Marcy
Guddemi, vice president for education and research for KinderCare.
"Computers provide them with the self-directed, hands-on approach that
they need to learn."

Computers Serve as Learning Tools

KinderCare's MacPlay to Learn program has been designed to encourage
children to learn through play and participation in age-specific
activities which help them develop their social, physical, emotional and
intellectual growth. Recognizing that computers aid the literacy
development of preschool-age children, Dr. Guddemi believes that children
at this age learn by reading, listening, speaking, watching, creating, and
-- above all -- interacting. Furthermore, her research found that children
are more confident and willing to experiment with letters on a keyboard
than they are when written manually.

As part of KinderCare's commitment to technology education, child care
teachers received 16 hours of early childhood computer instruction.
Additionally, staff members consult with leading authorities in the field
of early childhood education for program recommendations. Selected
programs are then piloted at centers before being offered for use at all
KinderCare centers.

Another important component of the MacPlay to Learn program is to get
families involved in their child's use of computers at the child care
facility as well as at home. Many centers offer parents workshops to
demonstrate the effectiveness of computers as learning tools for
children.

Apple's Commitment to Home Learning

"KinderCare's MacPlay to Learn program ties in perfectly with our ongoing
efforts to extend learning beyond the traditional classroom setting," said
Keith Fox, vice president of Apple's Worldwide Home Marketing Group. "At
Apple, we believe that children of all ages have the opportunity to learn
anytime, anyplace and anywhere if they are equipped with the best tools.
Whether a child's first computer experience takes place in one of
KinderCare's facilities, or at home with their family, computers are the
proven learning tools of our time."

With more than a decade of experience and leadership in the education
market, Apple is extending its expertise beyond the classroom and into the
home by designing programs and resources to increase family involvement
and the use of technology in home learning. One example of how Apple is
helping bridge the gap between home and school learning is through a
series of free Family Computing Workshops currently being provided to
educators at 1,000 schools nationwide. These workshops are designed to
introduce parents to the latest learning products and services, and
demonstrate the many ways parents can enhance their child's computing
experience and encourage an open dialogue between parents and teachers.
