For Chemists Who Want to Excel!

Macintosh users can now take advantage of Accord for Excel's unique
chemical spreadsheet capabilities

Synopsys is pleased to announce the release of Accord for Microsoft Excel
on the Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh platforms. Now Macintosh users
can benefit from the same powerful chemical spreadsheet capabilities as
users of the Microsoft Windows
version of Accord for Excel.

Accord for Excel's chemical spreadsheet environment offers a wealth of
facilities to assist research scientists in correlating and assimilating
property trends and structure-activity relationships. Which structure
should I synthesise next? How will a structural variation affect activity?
What factors influence reactivity? These are the kinds of everyday
questions Accord tor Excel is designed to help you answer.

Just as on the PC, the Macintosh version of Accord for Excel lets you sort
chemical tables in a spreadsheet, based on structural similarity, and
filter by chemical substructure. Users can also create R-group tables that
contain chemical substituent designations for a given core structure. And,
as you'd expect in a true chemical spreadsheet environment, you can also
link chemical calculations, such as molecular formula or weight, to Accord
chemical objects.

Accord for Excel works alike on both PC and Mac platforms, so training &
support issues for mixed sites are kept to a minimum. And, as Accord is a
32-bit clean application, it runs effortlessly under System 7 on the Power
Macintosh.

Dr. Glen Hopkinson, Managing Director at Synopsys, commented: "Accord for
Excel has Accord for established itself as an Excel indispensable aid to
discovery scientists focused on turning research data into useful
information. Now Macintosh and Power Macintosh users can also begin to
benefit from Accord for Excel's unique chemical spreadsheet
capabilities."

Development of the Macintosh version of Accord for Excel has been
facilitated by Synopsys' status as a
Microsoft Solution Provider and as an Associate of the Apple Developer
Program. Accord for Excel utilises next generation software component
technology under a licensing agreement with Apple Computer, Inc. This,
coupled with Synopsys' expertise in delivering excellence in chemical
information, makes Accord for Excel a hard act to beat!

The debut of Accord for Excel on the Macintosh coincides with the release
of the Accord Software Development Kit (SDK) on this platform (see the
article on page 6). This now opens up new opportunities for customers that
have standardised on the Macintosh to make fuller use of Accord in
developing fully-functional, chemically-aware application solutions.

More MOS By User Request!

Further demand for general backlog data has encouraged the production of a
database from 1991 MOS which will be released in mid-1995.

The release of 1991 MOS will increase the size of the MOS database to over
13,000 reactions, covering the '90's literature to date.

The MOS database is available as often as monthly and is the current
literature database of choice for a growing number of chemical and
pharmaceutical companies worldwide.

MOS is also gaining increasing popularity on the desktop where it is
configured for both ISIS/ Base and ChemBase.

Mike Hannant of the Royal Society of Chemistry will include the MOS
database in his 'Current Awareness' talk at the Synopsys User meeting in
May.

Production of Synopsys' new BioCatalysis database is now well underway,
with release 95.1 scheduled for April/May. This release will not only
contain backlog data but will also be up-to-date with material published
during 1995.

Bryan Jones and Herbert Holland have committed a great deal of time and
effort to the project with the goal of making BioCatalysis the most
complete review of biomolecule-mediated synthesis.

There has been an unprecedented demand for evaluations of the database and
a 1,000-reaction sample is now installed at over twenty companies
worldwide. The evaluation database is available in a variety of formats
including REACCS, ORAC and ISIS/ Host and, as with other Synopsys
databases, is available for a free 90-day in-house evaluation.

The Accord SDK Offers Productivity Gains to Power Users on Mac & PC

Chemistry Tools for Power Users

Developing custom chemistry applications has never been simple, but we at
Synopsys are working hard to make life a little easier.

The Accord Software Development Kit (SDK), released last year under
Windows, was an immediate hit. Now the Accord SDK has begun shipping on
the Macintosh and looks certain to repeat this success

The Accord SDK forms the foundation of our end-user desktop products, such
as Accord for Excel. Now, inhouse developers can gain full access to
Accord chemistry components via the SDK, on Mac and PC.

Productivity Gains

Why not reap the benefits of productivity tools, such as Visual Basic, and
impress your boss by developing fully functional, chemical applications in
record time! Already, a number of major chemical companies and 3rd-party
developers have based major applications around the Accord SDK. Feel free
to contact Synopsys to discuss the requirements of your application.

Chemistry Components

With the Accord SDK you can assemble your own custom solutions quickly and
easily. Synopsys' component software approach means that you can use
Accord facilities where and when required. Accord chemistry components can
be used in most good desktop packages that support OLE or have a macro or
scripting language. Omnis 7, Delphi, C++, Visual Basic - the choice is
yours!

Cost-Effective Licensing

The Accord SDK is licensed on the basis of developer and run-time versions.
This means that once you have developed your chemically-aware application,
you can field it very cost effectively to end users that want to use your
application - not develop it.

Premier Support Now Available

We try our best to answer support calls promptly, but previously our best
was not always good enough. That' s why we have introduced a new 'premier'
level of software support that may be particularly relevant to corporate
users.

Customers that sign up for Premier Support will gain priority response to
support problems, with direct access to an assigned support engineer. In
addition, Premier Support ensures that you automatically receive product
upgrades, white papers and technical notes as soon as they become
available.

Synopsys values your business and seeks to provide the very best
after-sales service. Many support problems are readily solved, but all
support problems are not created equal.

Tony Cook, Software Development Manager at Synopsys, explained: "Recently,
cl major customer reported a random crash when running Accord on a certain
make of PC. We finally tracked down the problem to a bug in the Windows
floating point emulator code that only showed up with a specific mother
board. A minor upgrade from Microsoft provided a cure, but not before we
had spent three days localising the problem."
