ProReports and ProServer - A True Client/Server Report Writing Solution

Houston, Texas, May 2, 1995 - Software Interfaces announced today that the
first release of its next-generation, client/server report writing
solutions, SQLAssist's ProReports and ProServer, is now shipping.
ProReports and ProServer incorporate all of the advanced features of both
ad hoc and production report writers and are easy to use for the novice to
the expert. ProReports allows access and reporting on heterogeneous
database data plus other data -- all in the same report. ProServer allows
report generation from any server retaining the client's identical
formatting attributes. In this first release, ProReports for the client is
shipping on Microsoft Windows and ProServer is shipping on SunOS.

"This is the first report writing solution on the market to exploit a true
client/server architecture," says Rahul Mehta, President of Software
Interfaces. "ProReports' next-generation client/server design lets users
use the natural strengths of the client and server to perform different
tasks. They can use the client to design simple to complex reports -- use
their desktop with the GUI interface, drag and drop, cut and paste, and
other user-friendly devices. And they can use the server to do the
processing-intensive work -- like perform a scheduled report execution of
electric utility bills to a million customers."

ProReports - ProReports for the client lets users quickly and easily create
reports having data from multiple queries and from different databases and
platforms all in the same report. "This is one of the most powerful new
entries in the report writing tool class," says Karen Rubenstrunk, Senior
Research Analyst at the META Group. "Previously, experts had to use a 3GL
or 4GL program to develop reports like these (reports with side-by-side
queries and advanced post-retrieval manipulations). Now they can create
these reports in seconds. Tools such as this will be very beneficial in
the decision support area; especially when users want to compare data from
different historical periods on the same page."

With clicks of the mouse, ProReports lets users work with data from
different data sources in one report. For example, a user could combine
manufacturing data from ORACLE, purchasing information from DB2, and
forecasting information from Microsoft Access all in a single report. This
technological breakthrough effectively ends the 'inaccessible islands of
information' problem. RDBMS data sources accessible natively in this first
release include: CA-OpenIngres, DB2 (all members), Informix, Oracle,
Rdb/VMS, and Sybase. Specialized data warehouse sources accessible include
HP Intelligent Warehouse, Red Brick, and OPUS from Unisys. Middleware
access is offered through EDA/SQL, SequeLink, and any ODBC source such as
Paradox, Microsoft Access, dBASE, and more.

ProReports' sophisticated querying and reporting capabilities allow the
user to slice and dice the report data in innumerable ways. For example,
ProReports lets the user do columnar plus matrix reporting with pivoting
for n-dimensional effects (as seen in OLAP-specific databases and OLAP
querying and reporting tools), have dependent and independent details (for
one-to-many and many-to-many relationships), include an unlimited number
of breaks and summary calculations, use if-then-else statements with color
highlights of results data, perform post-retrieval cross-calculations on
multiple query results and include them in the same report, create reports
in layout (design) mode or results mode (with all or partial sets of the
query data), and much more. ProReports gives users unlimited ways to
easily access, view, analyze, and present information.

For small to medium print jobs, users can print their report from their
ProReports' client. ProReports buffering capabilities will prevent the
desktop from crashing when processing large amounts of data. "People who
have used desktop applications and databases to create reports like mail
merges or invoices have probably experienced crashes from overloading
their desktop," says Mehta. "For example, if they have tried to create
mailmerges at the desktop importing more than 200 records from a database
into an invoice or letter with even a small graphic, they have probably
experienced difficulties. These difficulties were compounded if they
needed to send the print job to a networked printer. ProReports
client/server design solves all of that."

ProServer - Because of its client/server design, ProReports is an
invaluable tool for production-mode report writing. ProReports allows a
report to be created on a client and run on any other ProReports' client
or ProServer retaining the identical formatting attributes. While reports
can be printed from ProReports, the ability to run reports from ProServer
is cogent in many cases. For example, running reports from the server lets
an organization leverage the processing power of the server for that task;
lets the organization run the report at a scheduled time, reduces network
traffic, and frees up the desktop for other uses.

In addition to ProReports for Microsoft Windows (shipping today), client
platforms will include: Microsoft Windows NT, and X/Motif on
PC-compatibles, HP, RS/6000, Solaris, and SunOS. In addition to ProServer
for the SunOS (shipping today), ProServer support will include: HP, NCR,
RS/6000, Solaris, and VAX/VMS. Over the next six months, support will be
added for an expansive variety of desktop servers to large IBM mainframes.
Pricing for ProReports for the client is $695. Pricing for ProServer will
begin at $10,000.
