Software Publishers Association Hails USTR's Firm Stance on Japanese Trade
Practices

May 10, 1995 (Washington, DC) -- The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
sent a letter of support today to U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor
on his recent position concerning Japanese discriminatory trade treatment
of U.S. autos and auto parts. In the letter, Executive Director of the SPA
Ken Wasch pointed out that while the U.S. software industry enjoys open
access to Japanese markets, other industries are not as fortunate.

"Last year, Japan became the largest single market outside the United
States for personal computer software, accounting for many hundreds of
millions of dollars in sales for our member companies," said Mr. Wasch.
"In fact, the U.S. software industry now enjoys a market share in excess
of 50 percent in Japan. The SPA is grateful for the relationship our
industry enjoys with Japan, and looks forward to a continued bright future
there. However, there is no place for structural impediments that restrict
any U.S. industry's access to the Japanese market," he said.

SPA is the principal trade association of the software publishing industry.
Since 1985, it has grown to over 1160 members representing the leading
publishers in the business, consumer, and education software markets. The
SPA has offices in Washington, DC, and Paris, France. The full text of
Executive Director Ken Wasch's letter to Ambassador Kantor, as well as all
the SPA press releases are available on the SPA's World Wide Web site
(http://WWW.SPA.ORG).
