TOM SNYDER PRODUCTIONS RELEASES NEW VIDEODISCS BASED ON SMITHSONIAN
EXHIBIT

Watertown, MA, April 14, 1995 -- Tom Snyder Productions proudly announces
the release of Minds-On Science, a series of three cooperative learning
videodisc kits which allow students in grades 5-8 to explore the dynamic
relationship between science and society and build connections between
science concepts, history, and their own lives. The videodisc kits are
based on the Science in American Life exhibition at the Smithsonian's
National Museum of American History.

The Minds-On Science series actively involves students in making real-world
decisions about today's hottest science issues, and prepares the students
for a society increasingly shaped by science. There are three titles in
the series: The Impact of Discovery, For the Sake of the Nation, and For
Profit, For Planet.

Minds-On Science lets students face some of the issues that emerge when
science meets society. The issues are drawn from the "Science in American
Life" exhibit at the museum. The exhibit explores the history of science
in the United States since 1876 to show how science -- its achievements as
well as its controversies -- has shaped American culture and how Americans
have shaped science. - more

Each Minds-On Science videodisc kit is available for $249.95 and contains a
single-sided videodisc including a video library, 28 Student Portfolios,
and a Teacher's Guide. Optional software is available for Macintosh and
Windows for $49.95.

The first title, Minds-On Science: The Impact of Discovery, puts students
in the role of a scientist who has just discovered a compound that may
improve memory. The next step is to decide what to do with this discovery.
Do they publish their results, call a press conference, or market their
discovery? Each decision the students make helps them understand the work
of real scientists, the scientific process, and the impact decisions in
science have on our everyday lives.

In the second title, Minds-On Science: For the Sake of the Nation, students
take on the role of the President's science advisor and must determine
today's national science policy. Will our nation focus on biotechnology,
space exploration, or an environmental car? Students not only make these
important decisions, they become familiar with the science behind each
issue.

The third title, Minds-On Science: For Profit, For Planet, has students
take on the role of the president of a clothing manufacturer who must
decide how to invest last year's profits. Should they invest in new
high-tech clothing or the environment? Students become familiar with
polymers, the uses of biotechnology in industry, the environmental aspects
of manufacturing, and how science has contributed to fashion.

In each of theses titles, students use scientific and historical background
information from the Smithsonian exhibit as well as Tom Snyder
Productions' unique cooperative learning approach to establish goals,
understand the issues, and make decisions. Extension activities allow the
class to explore in greater depth, the science concepts and social issues
raised in the decision-making activities.
