S3 Inc. Features MPEG

S3 Inc., of Santa Clara, CA, has announced that it plans to implement MPEG
solutions across its entire product line. The company considres the
technology to be the best solution for video-compression needs. With a
software-only approach being used in its Native-MPEG, the company plans to
provide a hardwired MPEG device by 3rd quarter.

S3's team of engineers has been working with Xing Technology of Arroyo
Grande, CA, to fully understand MPEG technology. Xing approved a license
agreement with S3 for a core driver. From their collaboration, the S3
group has developed a hardware solution without the use of third-party
vendors' MPEG integrated circuit cores.

Targeting the PC market, S3's MPEG hardware will become the industry's
first MPEG-1 audio/video decoder chips optimized for the PC architecture.
Historically, products developed based on MPEG have been used in such
applications as video CDs and karaoke. The PC-targeted products will be
designed without the overhead needed for previously produced consumer
applications.
