O'REILLY LAUNCHES "WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW" SERIES WITH USING EMAIL
EFFECTIVELY

April 27, 1995 -- SEBASTOPOL, CA--Email users who want to get the most out
of this indispensable communication medium can now turn to "Using Email
Effectively", by Linda Lamb and Jerry Peek (160 pages; ISBN:
1-56592-103-8; $14.95 US), the first book in O'Reilly & Associates' new
"What You Need to Know" series. "What You Need to Know" books are aimed at
people who use technology as a tool for their real job. The series digests
and presents the kinds of information users would come across if they
worked with the technology for a while, in a supportive and knowledgeable
environment.

"Using Email Effectively" is a compilation of powerful tricks and tips from
email veterans. It's designed to guide busy email users to just the
solution they need for the problem or frustration at hand. The book is
aimed at people who use any PC or UNIX mailer. Readers probably already
know, or are learning, the basics of sending mail (what buttons to push),
but the book presents what they need to know--no more and no less--to make
the best use of a necessary business tool. It also provides more
sophisticated techniques for email users who wonder, "Wouldn't it be nice
if I could...?" as they are dealing with email.

The book is designed and laid out to be an easy-to-use guide for people
with no time to dig for answers. Readers can get information in several
formats--from first-person stories, frequent headlines that tell the gist
of each short section, the text itself, or reference sections. "Using
Email Effectively" features sidebars of users telling stories, because
many people learn best from personal experiences. How-to instructions are
formatted to allow readers to easily skip--or find--specific procedures.
In the book, the authors address the range of email programs, from
infinitely customizable mailers to bare bones programs.

Other topics covered include:
> How to organize saved mail so that you can find it again
> When to include a previous message, and how much to include, so
that your reader can quickly make sense of what's being discussed
> When a network address looks right, so that more of your messages
  get through the first time
> When a bounced message will never be delivered and when the bounce
  merely indicates temporary network difficulties
> How to successfully subscribe and unsubscribe to a mailing list
