NSF TO SERVE AS SITE FOR PUBLIC ACCESS TO FEDERAL ELECTRONIC CONFERENCE

How will I communicate with my elected officials in the future? Will filing
for, and receiving Social Security benefits, electronically save time and
money? How will I obtain a permit to a national park before leaving home?
How will I be able to participate more effectively in government's
decisionmaking process? These questions, and others, are part of a Clinton
Administration effort to learn how Americans want to interact
electronically with their government, and how information technology can
help make government work more effectively and efficiently. "People and
Their Governments in the Information Age," is a national electronic
dialogue that will be held May 1 14, 1995, and conducted through
electronic networks. The National Science Foundation, the federal agency
which established the NSFNET, will participate in the national dialogue
along with more than 300 organizations nationwide. During the two week
meeting, the public will have the opportunity to discuss with participants
five topics: services, benefits, information, participatory democracy, and
technology. NSF will provide Washington-metro area residents with free
access to two of its computers, so that their voices can be heard on these
important topics.

People can participate in the on-line discussion via public access
computers Monday-Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in
the NSF Exhibit Center, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia, near
the Ballston stop of the Orange Metro line. Assistance will be provided to
those who are new to using computers. For more information about NSF's
demonstration site, contact the Information Desk at (703) 3061234.

For more information about the meeting, the public may send a blank e-mail
message to info@meeting.fedworld.gov or may call the Government Printing
Office at (202) 512-1530. As of April 16, the GPO will make a complete
listing of public access sites.

The meeting is being sponsored by several federal agencies, including the
Office of Management and Budget, the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration, the National Technical Information Service's
FedWorld and the National Performance Review. The sponsoring agencies are
participants in the Information Infrastructure Task Force, an interagency
group formed to articulate and implement the administration's vision for
the National Information Infrastructure, and which is chaired by Commerce
Secretary Ron Brown. The GPO is also providing support for the meeting.
-end- NOTE TO EDITORS: Members of the media who would like to be briefed
by the meeting coordinators prior to the conference should notify Paige
Darden, NTIA, at (202) 482-1551.
