IBM Takes Lead in Value Arena with the Introduction of New Desktop PCs

SOMERS, N.Y., May 16, 1995 . . . Combining its technical expertise with its
reputation for quality and reliability to provide the best value in the
commercial desktopmarket, IBM today announced new 75 megahertz (MHz) and
90 MHz Pentium processor-based IBM Personal Computer 300 models.

The IBM PC 300 series delivers flexibility and value with exclusive
diagnostic, system management and ease-of-use software innovations at
aggressive prices. The new IBM PC 300, with a 75 MHz processor, 540
millionbyte (MB) hard drive, and 8 megabytes (MB) of memory, is priced at
$1,823 via IBM PC Direct. Dealers' prices may vary. IBM now offers a wide
range of processor solutions, including the 120 MHz Pentium processor on
the PC 700.

"With these systems, IBM has created a total computing package that
delivers value, while meeting the demanding -- and growing -- needs of the
corporate user," said W.S. "Ozzie" Osborne, general manager, IBM
Commercial Desktop Systems.

               Choice and Flexibility

IBM also has incorporated several innovations and applications that help
make managing and implementing the latest technologies easier, while
creating extra value for the user.

SelectaSystem allows users to quickly and easily select either OS/2 Warp or
DOS/Windows as their operating system environment by simply clicking on an
icon. OS/2 Warp, which allows users to run both 16-bit Windows and 32-bit
OS/2 applications, provides impressive usability features and comes with a
BonusPak of more than a dozen popular applications, including one-button
access to the Internet and CompuServe.

                    Asset Management

In addition, NetFinity, IBM's world-class systems-management software, has
been pre-loaded on the IBM PC 300 and 700 since October 1994. NetFinity
allows a system administrator to manage networked systems, either locally
or remotely, in a variety of operating environments, reducing support
costs and downtime. NetFinity identifies installed adapter cards and the
memory in each system, and alerts administrators to hard drive errors or
memory failure. It also notifies an administrator when a user's hard drive
utilization or processor exceeds a pre-determined threshold, among other
functions.

IBM PCs also come with Vital Product Data (VPD), an identification tool
allowing administrators to keep track of system types, models and serial
numbers. With NetFinity, administrators can monitor VPD and other system
information remotely, saving support staff cost. Other pre-loaded
applications include:

o Online Housecall, which allows a user to connect
to either in-house technical support or directly to IBM
  via modem to diagnose and fix system problems;

o AnyView Graphics Manager, which lets a user
set the ideal graphics resolution and color settings
for individual applications without exiting and
  restarting specific programs;

o Scheduler, which allows a user to program the
system to activate at a specific time and perform
pre-determined functions, such as faxing documents
during hours when telephone rates are lower.

            Industrial Strength Solutions

"Fireman's Fund was looking for a machine with enough power and long-term
industrial strength to carry us into the future. The IBM PC 300 P75 meets
that need," said Virgil L. Pittman, senior vice president, systems,
Fireman's Fund Insurance Company.

"Working in partnership with IBM, Fireman's Fund was able to review early
shipments of the equipment to validate timing benchmarks and the
performance increase we were expecting." Fireman's Fund is using hundreds
of IBM PCs to make its Commercial Insurance business more efficient and
profitable.

               Additional Highlights

IBM offers the new PC 300 with either 8 MB or 16 MB of memory, and either
540 MB or 850 MB hard drives. The local bus on the PC 300 can support up
to four IDE device attachments, and implements Bus Mastering technology.
The systems come standard with 1 MB of video memory on the motherboard,
and space for an additional 1 MB for high performance applications.

Already a leader in providing platforms for advanced 32-bit operating
systems with OS/2 Warp, IBM desktops will also support Windows 95. In
addition, many IBM PC configurations are Energy Star and Desktop
Management Interface compliant, as well as Plug and Play ready.

The new IBM PC 300 models are generally available today. The IBM PC 700
with a 120 MHz Pentium processor will be available July 16.

               Service and Support

IBM, long recognized as an industry leader in service and support, offers
the PC 300 and 700 series with an extensive three-year warranty,
international coverage and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Also, HelpWare
provides set-up, usage and service assistance around the clock, via
