EveryWare ships Butler SQL for PowerPC

Version 1.5 of Butler SQL--EveryWare Development Corp.'s client-server SQL
database increases speed 2 to 3 times, includes new features and new
connectivity toolkits.

MISSISSAUGA, ON--May 16, 1995--EveryWare Development Corp. today began
shipping version 1.5 of Butler SQL, its client/server SQL database for the
Macintosh. This is an important step forward for EveryWare as it marks the
first release of a native PowerPC version of its popular SQL database
server.

EveryWare reports a 2 to 3 times speed improvement on most database
operations when running Butler SQL on a Power Macintosh. Users of the 68K
version will also notice a speed improvement of 25-40% over previous
Butler SQL versions. The increases in performance are attributed to a
combination of programming optimizations and the raw speed of the RISC
architecture. "Over the last year Butler SQL has been rewritten to take
full advantage of PowerPC technology. From the ground up, Butler SQL 1.5
benefits from the Power Macintosh RISC architecture," said Greg Hemstreet,
vice president of R&D.

"Tests of Job Manager, which uses Butler SQL as its backend database
server, indicate that the native PowerPC version of Butler SQL running on
a Power Macintosh is significantly faster than previous non-native
versions," said Bob Long, vice-president of engineering for Meta
Communications, Inc. Meta bundles Butler SQL with Job Manager, their job
tracking software for the pre-press industry.

Another area of significant enhancement is Butler SQL's use of stored
procedures. "Many of our customers make use of Butler SQL's outstanding
support for stored procedures. Version 1.5 dramatically reduces the memory
requirements of stored procedures," said Hemstreet.

Stored procedures are SQL procedural statements that reside on the server
and are automatically compiled when Butler SQL is launched. Stored
procedures can dramatically reduce network traffic because client
applications simply send the procedure's name rather than the entire SQL
statement to the server. Since the SQL statement is already compiled and
ready for execution, the processing time is greatly reduced.

Prior to version 1.5 of Butler SQL, compiled stored procedures were
duplicated in memory for each connected user. With version 1.5, the
procedures are read-only and shared by all users. For customers who rely
on stored procedures (and many do because of the speed advantages of
pre-compiling) version 1.5 significantly reduces the memory overhead for
each connected user.

Also shipping with version 1.5, is an enhanced set of enablers to backup
EveryWare's claim that Butler SQL is the most accessible SQL database on
the market. Five ButlerLink toolkits enable Butler SQL to serve as a
backend database to applications that, on their own, don't inherently work
with Butler SQL. These toolkits are:

* ButlerLink/Web--for connectivity with WebSTAR World-Wide Web servers
* ButlerLink/FC--for connectivity with FirstClass systems
* ButlerLink/AppleScript--for connectivity with any application that
  can send AppleScript
* ButlerLink/XCMD--for connectivity with any application that can use
  HyperCard XCMD's
* ButlerLink/Newton--allows the Newton to connect to Butler SQL

All the ButlerLink toolkits are FREE and included in the Butler SQL box.
Current users of Butler SQL can download it from a number of sites
including EveryWare's Web and FTP sites, and EveryWare Online, their
FirstClass conferencing system.

EveryWare has also announced the signing of two large Canadian customers.
Both Ernst & Young and KPMG in Canada have recently purchased site
licenses of Butler SQL to perform various database duties in their
distributed database environments.
