Apple Announces Plans for Mail and Messaging Interoperability Among
Macintosh and Windows Users

ELECTRONIC MAIL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE, New Orleans, Louisiana-- May 8,
1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that it has signed a contract
with Transend Corporation to develop software that provides
interoperability between Apple Macintosh computers running Apple
PowerShare Collaboration Servers software and PCs running Windows. Under
the terms of the agreement, Transend plans to create software that lets
Windows 3.x and Windows 95 users exchange electronic mail with Macintosh
users, via a PowerShare server. Any mail-enabled software on the Windows
computer that takes advantage of MAPI-1 (Microsoft's Application Program
Interface) should be compatible with this PowerShare MAPI service
provider.

Once the PowerShare MAPI service provider software is running on the
Windows computer, the user should be able to exchange mail with any
user--either PC or Macintosh--connected to the PowerShare server, enjoying
full advantage of the PowerShare authentication services, which use
encryption to ensure a high level of privacy for the messages sent. In
addition, Windows users can take advantage of the PowerShare catalog
(directory) services.

"Again, Apple delivers on our commitment to seamlessly integrate Macintosh
computers into cross-platform environments," said Ike Nassi, vice
president of system software technology. "This combination extends the
Macintosh ease-of-use advantage to network administrators of heterogeneous
environments and provides a compelling electronic mail service for Windows
users."

"Transend recognizes the importance of providing Windows users the ability
to connect to Apple's robust PowerShare messaging system," said Joe
Barbera vice president of sales and marketing for Transend. "Transend was
an early supporter of MAPI and has developed a great deal of expertise
integrating messaging clients with diverse e-mail systems," continued
Barbera. "The ability to deliver Windows messaging clients on the
PowerShare messaging platform provides Apple's customers with a true
cross-platform messaging solution."

Availability

Availability of the PowerShare MAPI service provider is planned for the end
of 1995. Apple plans to make the product available in the United States
and internationally, offering users a license to distribute the service
provider to any Windows users on their local network.
