Apple Introduces New Versions of Three Core Macintosh Development Products

SAN JOSE, California - May 8, 1995 - Apple Computer, Inc. today introduced
new versions of three popular products that bundle Macintosh programming
tools and technologies:

 --Release 17 of MPW (Macintosh Programmer's Workshop) Pro;
 --Release 17 of E.T.O.: Essentials * Tools * Objects;
 --Release 3 of the Mac OS Software Developer's Kit (SDK).

Announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, the new
software releases provide important tool updates and information for
developers who create high performance applications for Macintosh and
Power Macintosh systems.

"To stimulate productive development of world-class software for the Mac
platform, we continually improve our suite of tools," said Pat Harding,
senior manager of Apple Developer Tools Marketing. "By regularly
delivering innovations through subscription products such as E.T.O. and
the Mac OS SDK, we provide our developers with added value that
complements and enhances any Macintosh programming environment."

MPW Pro Release 17

For those who require a general-purpose C/C++ programming environment for
developing Power Macintosh and Motorola 680x0- based Macintosh
applications, this suite of programming tools includes several important
new elements:

--The Macintosh Programmer's Toolbox Assistant (MPTA), an online reference
to all the toolbox routines and data structures described in Inside
Macintosh, Apple's definitive programmer's guide. Featuring built-in
hypertext links for easy navigation, MPTA is accessible automatically from
the MPW editing environment via "hot keys." It may also be used as a
stand-alone online reference.

--Two versions of MacApp, the leading object-oriented framework and class
library for creating stand-alone Macintosh applications. Version 3.1.3
(final) is a maintenance release, including several bug fixes and support
for new C++ compilers. An alpha release of MacApp 3.3 is also included.
The previously announced MacApp 3.5--which includes OpenDoc support--is
still in development. Its release date is expected to be aligned with
OpenDoc availability. In the interim, MacApp 3.3 responds to immediate
developer needs for AppleScript support, 'drag and drop' view capabilities
and electronic mail support. Apple expects to include MacApp 3.5 with
future MPW Pro and E.T.O. releases.

Members of the development community have endorsed Apple's decision to
split the MacApp development path. According to Mike Rossetti, engineering
manager at Dayna Communications, "There is a big mutual 'win' with this
approach. Developers are constantly attempting to keep pace with new,
emerging technologies. Having access to drag and drop, mail support, and
AppleScript with MacApp 3.3 will be a tremendous boon to Dayna's ongoing
projects. And of course, we look forward to OpenDoc support through
version 3.5."

"Once again, Apple's MacApp code sets a standard and shows 'the right way'
for many developers to incorporate Apple's system technology into their
applications," said Carl Nelson, a recognized MacApp pioneer. "Providing
an intermediate release of MacApp gives developers access to seasoned
technology, and provides a chance to make changes and ship these features
in anticipation of the next release of MacApp with OpenDoc support."

Other notable features of MPW Pro Release 17 include:

--A beta release of the Code Fragment Manager (CFM) runtime
  software for 680x0-based systems, which streamlines development of
  shared libraries and drop-in code modules;
--The first beta release of the System Object Model (SOM) runtime
  software, an object-oriented programming technology for building,
  packaging and manipulating binary class libraries;
--A late beta release of the Power Macintosh Debugger;
--A beta release of the Virtual User automated testing tool,
  featuring significant speed improvements.

E.T.O. Release 17

In addition to receiving all MPW Pro components, E.T.O. subscribers now
receive Symantec C++ 8.0 for Power Macintosh, a new development
environment for creating Power Macintosh applications. Version 8.0 is
fully scriptable and recordable, with a powerful, easy-to-use interface
that enables automation of complex software building tasks. Its editor
supports advanced features such as automatic pop-up markers, automatic
syntax highlight editing, and unlimited split pane formatting. Apple is
delivering the full functionality of Symantec C++ 8.0 for Power Macintosh
to current E.T.O. subscribers at no additional charge.

Mac OS SDK Release 3

Introduced in November, 1994, this collection of powerful technologies and
related programming information helps developers add support for many Mac
OS system extensions. Each quarter, Mac OS SDK subscribers automatically
receive a CD-ROM disk with the most recent version of these system
software extensions, programming interfaces and libraries, sample code and
technical documentation. Available on CD-ROM at a fraction of the cost
required to purchase SDKs individually, the Mac OS SDK is an affordable,
efficient resource for Macintosh developers.

Key new features included in Release 3 include:

--Japanese resources for Apple Guide 1.2.5;
--Programming information for ColorSync 2.0 color matching software;
--More than 25 localized versions of Apple's software installer;
--New sample code illustrating the Macintosh "drag and drop"
  capability;
--Technical documentation for Mac Open Database Connectivity (ODBC);
--QuickDraw GX 1.1.1 programming information.

Price

MPW Pro, priced at U.S. $495, is a complete suite of developer tools on
CD-ROM. It includes a development environment, compilers (C, C++,
Assembler), the MacApp application framework, debuggers, and testing tools
to build applications for 680x0 and Power Macintosh systems. It also
includes three introductory tutorial manuals and complete electronic
documentation. Updates from previous versions of MPW Pro are U.S. $195.
Upgrades from older MPW-based products (MPW Development System, MPW
Development Environment, or Macintosh on RISC SDK) are U.S. $295.

E.T.O., priced at U.S. $1,095 for a complete new subscriber kit, is sold as
a 3-issue-per-year, CD-ROM-based subscription. Annual renewals are U.S.
$400. E.T.O. includes all MPW Pro software, plus Symantec C++ for Power
Macintosh, the suite of Inside Macintosh books on CD-ROM, and complete
printed tools documentation.

The Mac OS SDK is offered on CD-ROM at U.S. $299 for a one-year
subscription (four quarterly updates).

Availability

MPW Pro and E.T.O. are expected to be available in mid-May, and the Mac OS
SDK is available immediately through APDA, Apple's source for development
tools and related programming products. APDA publishes the Apple Developer
