Apple Computer Provides Interactive TV Set-Top Technology For Lightspan's
Deployment of Interactive Educational Content

DALLAS, Texas--May 8, 1995--(National Cable Television Association's Cable
'95 Conference)--Apple Computer, Inc. announced today that it is providing
its interactive TV set-top technology for a six-state trial of interactive
educational programming created by The Lightspan Partnership, Inc.
Lightspan's goal is to bridge schools and homes with interactive
curriculum programming for children. The programming includes interactive
series which teach reading and mathematics to children ages 4 to 12.

The Apple interactive TV set-top technology being used in the Lightspan
deployment is derived from Macintosh technology and features an MPEG1
decoder, 4MB RAM, 2 MB ROM and a 68040 microprocessor. It also contains a
subset of the MacOS and a multimedia architecture incorporating both
QuickDraw, Apple's 32- bit graphics software, and Apple's QuickTime
multimedia software, which allows users to see video, music, text,
animation and other dynamic information. Apple is planning to license its
interactive TV set-top technology to a third-party company which will
manufacture the systems for the full-scale deployment.

The Lightspan service is initially being deployed using stand- alone
set-top boxes equipped with CD-ROM drives until broadband interactive
television networks become available in communities nationwide.

"Apple is pleased to be working with content providers such as Lightspan to
enable the deployment of quality content over an ITV system. We feel it is
incumbent upon Apple as a leader in learning to help develop advanced
systems for delivering educational programming," said Rick Shriner, vice
president of Apple Core Technologies.

Initial Lightspan programming will consist of "MARS Moose," an interactive
series for children ages four to seven, which teaches reading concepts and
skills; "The Secret of Googol," the company's mathematics series for ages
four to seven; and "Str.at.es" and "KidVid: Timeless Math," an interactive
series providing instruction in reading and mathematics, respectively, for
children ages 10 to 12. The series combine live action film, traditional
cel animation, state-of-the- art computer-generated animation, compelling
characters and story lines and videogame-style interactivity to engage
children in learning basic and advanced skills.

"The Lightspan service is designed to port to all of the platforms that are
emerging as ITV standards," said John Kernan, chairman and CEO, The
Lightspan Partnership. "We're pleased to have Apple as one of our
technology affiliates because we think their core technologies are likely
to be important pieces of many of these platforms."

With its interactive TV set-top technologies, Apple is leveraging more than
a decade of expertise in multimedia as well as hardware and software
integration. The company is working with major service and content
providers to license its hardware and software for use in ITV systems
worldwide.

Apple's efforts in the ITV arena began in early 1994 with its participation
in the world's first major ITV trial with BT (formerly British Telecom).
It has since participated as a provider of interactive TV set-top
technology in an ITV trial with Belgacom, Belgium's telecommunications
provider. Apple also made several other ITV-related announcements today at
NCTA (see separate releases).

The Lightspan Partnership, Inc. is headquartered in Carlsbad, Calif., with
production studios in San Diego and is backed by Comcast Corporation,
Microsoft Corporation and TCI Technology Ventures and by the venture
capital firms of Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers and
Institutional Venture Partners. The company's mission is to support U.S.
education reform by connecting schools and homes in communities nationwide
with entertainment-grade interactive curriculum programming.
