TYSON FOODS SELECTS SYBASE'S DATA WAREHOUSE SOLUTION OVER ORACLE AND RDB

Sybase To Help Tyson Foods Architect A Data Warehouse Solution for Rapid
Business Change

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 25, 1995 -- Sybase. Inc. today announced that Tyson
Foods has chosen SYBASE software, over Oracle and Rdb, to play a central
role in supporting its data warehousing initiative and for use in a key
application that supplies product information to more than 70 Tyson sites
across North America. Tyson Foods is an important win for Sybase and
reflects its ability to help Fortune 500 companies architect themselves
for rapid business change. The application currently under development
will contain comprehensive marketing and production information for all of
Tyson Foods' 7,000 products. The flexibility of SQL Server 10 combined
with SYBASE connectivity software provides Tyson Foods with a wide range
of connectivity options to support the creation of new data warehouses
while providing seamless data access. With $5.2 billion in annual
revenues, Tyson Foods is approaching the ranks of America's Fortune 100
corporations.

The world's leading poultry supplier selected Sybase's SQL Server 10, over
Oracle and its currently installed Rdb database, because of Sybase's
ability to provide a flexible, client/server architecture coupled with
connectivity software.

"SYBASE met our needs for an open, flexible client/server database. It
proved to be the only vendor that could deliver connectivity software that
would support our data warehousing initiative. Sybase also gave us the
ability to support many more users in an easy fashion," stated Steve
Hankins, vice president of management information systems (MIS) at Tyson
Foods. "From A business partner perspective, Sybase came to the table
ready to play.

Their support and responsiveness to our needs was outstanding.
Consequently, we are looking closely at Sybase as an alternative to move
our other mission-critical applications."

Tyson Foods' Product Specification Application

Sybase's SQL Server 10 relational database will support Tyson Foods'
product specification application, using Sybase's OmniSQL Gateway, an
enterprise client/server gateway that provides transparent distributed
processing among heterogeneous databases, and Open Client, a client API
that enables third-party software to access SQL Server. Upon deployment,
300 users will migrate from a text-based information resource to a
distributed, on-line system. The application includes comprehensive
product information vital to the company's sales, marketing, production,
and purchasing departments. The marketing department, for instance, will
be able to access information pertaining to product descriptions,
packaging details, product labeling, handling, usage, nutritional data,
and cooking instructions. The production department will be able to access
information about processing, product formulation, product control
standards, product build instructions, meat formulation, and quality
control.

Users to Gain Improved Productivity and Broader Choice of Data Access
Tools

Tyson Foods had been running Rdb for client/server processing. The system,
however, required significant time and staff resources for many functions
ranging from administration to porting applications. Employees could not
use a variety of PC tools to access data, but rather had to learn a 4th
generation language in order to efficiently access information in an
existing data warehouse. The complexity caused Tyson Foods to search for a
new database that would be highly flexible and support groups of up to 200
users throughout its 70 sites.

With SYBASE software, Tyson Foods gains increased connectivity options and
scalability. The food giant expects to realize productivity gains, since
users can now easily employ a range of widely-used PC tools to access the
data warehouse. The MIS department has already realized productivity gains
as a result of the inherent flexibility of SQL Server 10. Because of
Sybase's open API, Tyson was able to move two Microsoft Access
applications to SQL Server 10 in one afternoon. With Rdb, this would have
required more time and resources.

"We're extremely pleased with Tyson Foods' decision to select SYBASE
software," stated Richard Yanowitch, vice president of corporate marketing
at Sybase. "Their decision underscores the need to provide highly flexible
software that seamlessly links disparate systems together and can still be
deployed quickly. The Tyson win demonstrates our ability to help customers
architect their systems for rapid business change."

Why Tyson Foods Chose Sybase

During its evaluation, Tyson Foods considered Oracle, Rdb, and SYBASE. The
company found that SYBASE software provided a solid client/server
architecture, supported heavy processing loads, and gave users and
programmers seamless connectivity to data. Because the MIS department
plans to use more than one client/server application development toolset,
it determined that SYBASE was very open and offered an extensive array of
connectivity solutions. And, while Rdb performed adequately for handling
large transaction processing, it lacked connectivity solutions and was
overly complex for certain applications.

"SYBASE software provided better integration and better connectivity
solutions than Oracle or Rdb," added Steve Hankins. "We discovered that
Sybase helped us get our systems up and running very quickly, enabling us
to be more responsive to rapidly changing business requirements."

The Marketplace

In response to shifting consumer tastes, Tyson Foods has successfully
established itself as the market innovator by introducing new products
such as pre-marinated chicken and ready-to-eat roasted chicken products. A
large percentage of company revenues now come from Tyson's new products.
Besides having to contend with global food conglomerates, the company also
faces new business pressures that include shorter product life cycles and
reduced distribution lead times, which stem from an increased market
demand for poultry. To maintain its competitive advantage, Tyson Foods
wants to provide employees with direct, easy-to-access data so they can be
more responsive to market changes.

Tyson Foods Implementation

Tyson Foods operates one central Alpha server running VMS at its corporate
offices. Eleven hundred PCs are networked via DEC Pathworks to a file
server that resides at each distributed location and runs throughout Tyson
Foods' enterprise. Standard PC tools are Microsoft's Office suite and
Lotus 1-2-3. Sybase's OmniSQL Gateway and Open Client will support data
warehouses. Tyson Foods will create its front-end applications using
Powersoft's PowerBuilder. At a later stage of its implementation, the
company plans to use Open Server, an application program interface that
integrates non-SYBASE data, applications, and application services, as
well as Replication Server, which provides realtime database copies to the
company's remote sites. The first phase of the system is expected to be in
production at Tyson's corporate offices in March, 1995, followed by a
phased roll out to other sites.
