SYBASE ENTERPRISE SQL SERVER MANAGER TO SUPPORT SNMP

Sybase Also to Publish Full API for SYBASE SQL Server Performance
Monitoring; Company Demonstrates Commitment to Openness in Database
Administration

EMERYVILLE, CA, February 21, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that its breakthrough,
object-oriented Enterprise SQL Server Manager product will support the
simple network management protocol (SNMP). This capability is scheduled to
become available on Enterprise SQL Server Manager in the second half of
1995 and will enable system managers to monitor high-level SYBASE database
events from popular systems management platforms. Sybase also announced
that in June it will publish the full API (application programming
interface) for detailed monitoring of the performance of its databases,
giving customers and third-party vendors the ability to easily develop
their own monitoring products for SYBASE SQL Server 10.

"With these announcements, we're extending our long tradition of openness
at Sybase into database administration," said John Mandile, vice president
of the Systems Management Products division at Sybase. "Our database
administration products are architected to be robust in their own right
and to enable customers to select from a variety of third-party systems
management products, depending on the level of detail they need in
monitoring SYBASE databases."

In all, Sybase provides five options for monitoring its databases:

* Third-party products that use SNMP;
* Customer applications and third-party products that use the
  SYBASE performance monitoring API;
* Customer applications and third-party products that access
  SQL Server systems tables;
* Products using the Tivoli Management Framework and;
* The graphical displays of SYBASE SQL Server Monitor or
  Enterprise SQL ServerManager.

SNMP Support

With the addition of the SNMP alternative to Enterprise SQL Server Manager,
users of popular systems management platforms such as HP OpenView, IBM
NetView 6000 and Sun Solstice will be able to monitor high-level SYBASE
database events. These events include whether a database is operational,
whether there is sufficient disk space and how many people are using a
particular database.

"The SNMP standard, defined by the database industry, specifies that SNMP
can be used to alert system managers at a high level when there are
database problems," said Joe Matibag, senior product manager for SunSoft's
enterprise management products. "Database administrators can then use
sophisticated monitoring and management tools to diagnose and correct
these problems. This sort of synergy of monitoring and management systems
is the heart of Solstice."

"Customers want to use HP OpenView for managing their distributed
databases, so we're really excited about the SNMP capability in Enterprise
SQL Server Manager," said Robert Hoog, general manager for
Hewlett-Packard's Network & System Management Division. "It gives OpenView
users a powerful way to monitor SYBASE SQL Server products throughout an
enterprise."

Enterprise SQL Server Manager is currently in beta testing at 14 customer
sites and will be generally available in early 1995. SNMP capabilities for
the product will be available in the second half of 1995.

Performance Monitoring API and System Tables

In addition to SNMP support for Enterprise SQL Server Manager and its own
monitoring products, Sybase will publish its complete performance
monitoring API in June, giving customers and third-party vendors the
ability to develop database monitoring applications based on a stable
programming interface. This API, which has been reviewed by Sybase
partners, will also be used by Sybase's SQL Server Monitor product.

"The published API gives ISVs a stable target for writing their monitoring
applications," said Mandile. "Of course, if ISVs want to write programs
directly for our systems tables as some database vendors promote, we allow
them to do that as well. The bottom line will be more product options for
our customers, depending on their needs."

Sybase Database Administration Products

In addition to third-party products that utilize SNMP, the SYBASE
monitoring API and SYBASE systems tables, Sybase offers its own robust
database monitoring and management products designed specifically for
Sybase databases.

Enterprise SQL Server Manager can monitor and automatically respond to
pre-defined database events, saving administrators from dealing with
common problems. In addition, Enterprise SQL Server Manager can share
high-level database event information via the event services available
with the Tivoli Management Framework. This framework offers several
advantages over other protocols, especially its lower network burden and
better scalability.

"We believe that object-based solutions such as Tivoli Management
Framework, which is currently a draft X/Open standard, represent a
compelling solution both today and into the future," said Mandile.
"Object-oriented consoles simplify distributed database administration and
offer an excellent connectivity solution with systems management
products."

For detailed database performance monitoring, SQL Server Monitor, scheduled
for general availability this June, gives database managers an up-close
view of database performance and helps to identify potential bottlenecks.
SQL Server Monitor, the follow-on product to the existing SQL Monitor
product, features an easy-to-use graphical interface, object-level data
access, and the ability to view real-time performance information and
historical performance trends. SQL Server Monitor is complemented by the
SQL Server Manager product, Sybase's icon-based tool for managing local or
remote SQL Server databases, which began shipping in late 1994.

Sybase in Database Administration

Database administration is one of Sybase's four key areas of product focus,
which also include RDBMS servers, interoperability and software
application development tools. Sybase has been offering database
administration products since 1990 with its release of SA Companion.
Today, in addition to SQL Server Manager, Enterprise SQL Server Manager
and SQL Server Monitor, Sybase's systems management products include
Backup Server for on-line backups, Audit Server for enhanced security
environments, Replication Server Manager for replication management, and
Gateway Manager for heterogeneous data access.
