SYBASE BECOMES THE FIRST U.S. SOFTWARE VENDOR TO ACHIEVE MOST STRINGENT
LEVEL OF ISO 9000 COMPLIANCE

ISO 9001/TickIT Certification For Engineering and Customer Service Makes
Sybase the Most ISO 9000-Compliant Of Any U.S. Software Vendor

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 31, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company today announced that it has achieved the most
stringent level of ISO 9000-compliance in the United States of any
independent software vendor. The company was awarded ISO 9001/TickIT
certification for three of its engineering groups - Navigation Server,
Replication Server, and connectivity- and for its customer service and
support operations. Sybase is the first major software vendor to earn ISO
9001 /TickIT certification in the United States. The company expects to
achieve ISO 9001 /TickIT certification for its SQL Server engineering
group by the end of March.

Combined with the ISO 9002 certification of its European operations and
previously announced certification of its manufacturing and logistics
groups, Sybase believes that it is now the most ISO 9000-compliant
independent U.S. software vendor. The certification audits were performed
by the London-based Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) registrar
in September and November 1994.

"We're proud of the breadth of our ISO 9000 compliance and especially the
ISO 9001 /TickIT certification," said Mark Hoffman, president and CEO of
Sybase. "Many U.S. based software vendors go through the motions of
obtaining small levels of ISO 9000 compliance, primarily so they can do
business more easily in Europe. Sybase is aiming for full compliance. To
us, ISO 9000 isn't a checklist item: it's a way to continuously improve
the quality and consistency of what we sell. This ultimately leads to
better products and services
for our customers."

ISO 9000

ISO 9000 is an internationally recognized quality standard that measures
the degree to which an organization has instituted consistent, repeatable
quality processes. ISO 9000 is widely used in Europe where it helps to
ensure consistency of products and services produced by companies in
different countries. It's becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. where
telecommunications companies, governmental agencies, and others use it to
judge a vendor's commitment to quality. More than 40,000 companies in 90
countries have adopted the ISO 9000 standards.

The ISO 9000 series consists of three standards: ISO 9001, 9002, and 9003.
The only difference between the three is scope. ISO 9001 is the most
comprehensive, covering the entire range of activity within an enterprise.
ISO 9002 is similar to 9001 except that software design and development
are omitted. ISO 9003 focuses only on final inspection and test.

Sybase's Commitment

To date, Sybase has invested more than $1 million in ISO 9000-related
efforts and more than half of the company's worldwide development,
manufacturing, order management, and customer support operations have been
ISO 9000 certified. The company expects to have 95 percent of its
operations ISO 9000-compliant by the end of 1995.

Perhaps most important is Sybase's ISO 9001/TickIT certification. 'TickIT'
refers to British software quality standards sponsored by the U.K.
Department of Trade (DTI) and the Computing Services Association (CSA),
and which are maintained by the DISC TickIT Office in London.

"TickIT certification is tougher because it requires the use of highly
trained auditors who have been in the software industry and know how the
business works," said Mike Macfarlane, vice president of quality at
Sybase. "We expect to get the most out of our certification by achieving
ISO 9001 /TickIT certification in all our engineering and support
groups."

Putting ISO to Work

An example of ISO 9000 in action is the way it has helped Sybase's customer
service and support operations. "ISO is a concrete set of standards that
helps us provide better, more consistent service to our customers," said
Lou Muggeo, vice president of technical support operations for Sybase.
"The standardization mandated by ISO 9000 has helped us create a uniform
service and support operation around the world. This gives our customers
especially multinational corporations - a look, feel and quality of
service from Sybase that is nearly identical no matter where the customer
site is. We believe that this gives us a leg up on competitors who are
still wrangling with consistency of service around the globe."

International Organization for Standardization

The International Standardization Organization (ISO) was founded in 1946 to
develop a common set of manufacturing, trade, and communication standards.
The organization is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is composed of 91
member countries. The United States member organization is the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI). All standards developed by the ISO
are voluntary; no legal requirements force countries to adopt them.
