HUGHES AIRCRAFT SELECTS SYBASE AS STRATEGIC SUPPLIER

Leading Worldwide Defense Contractor Standardizes on Sybase To Integrate
Enterprise-Wide Operations

EMERYVILLE, CA, February 3, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced a strategic agreement with Hughes
Aircraft Company in which Hughes will standardize on SYBASE technology as
the foundation for its company-wide enterprise client/server information
system. Hughes, a $9 billion leading global electronics supplier, has
chosen SYBASE technology as a key part of its largescale, multi-year
systems consolidation and reengineering efforts. Over the next several
years, Hughes will leverage its partnership with Sybase to help transition
its current mainframe legacy systems to client/server applications. Sybase
SQL Server, Open Client, Open Server, and Net-Gateway were named as key
components of the Hughes enterprise architecture. Hughes is also piloting
use of Sybase's OmniSQL Gateway product to access its heterogeneous DBMS
environments.

The new SYBASE-based client/server information system will help Hughes to
control IS costs while implementing re-engineered business processes, and
is expected to eventually support Hughes' operations which include over
52,000 employees worldwide. The migration to client/server will enable the
integration of Hughes' mainframe hardware and legacy application software,
distributed networks, personal computer platforms, and distributed
client/server components.

"We chose Sybase as a strategic partner for the integration of our
heterogeneous internal systems because it offered us the flexibility and
reliability that an organization as large as ours requires to meet its
business goals," said James Woods, chief information officer at Hughes.
"Sybase strategy and products fit very well with the distributed computing
and database management portions of our Hughes Enterprise Architecture."

"Client/server systems are increasingly deployed in functions that are
critical to the success of a business, making the performance and
reliability of SYBASE software more important than ever. We look forward
to working with Hughes to enhance its ability to compete during the
evolution of the defense electronics market," said Dave Peterschmidt,
chief operating officer and executive vice president at Sybase. "We are
particularly pleased with this contract because Hughes' decision to
standardize on SYBASE was based on the proven success of our product
performance in existing Hughes applications."

Business Requirements

As the defense electronics industry downsizes, Hughes is changing business
processes and making investments in new technologies in order to stay
competitive. Already, several Hughes divisions have standardized on SYBASE
technology. For example, at Hughes Space and Communications, the space
satellite manufacturing arm of Hughes Aircraft Company, SYBASE technology
is being used to build applications that do more for less money.
Integrated Sybase RDBMS-based client/server solutions have replaced
mainframe-based systems for program business management applications.
Using SYBASE technology has helped reduce processing costs, while
increasing functionality by 10-fold.
