QMS USING NEST TO ACCELERATE NETWORK PRINT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

February 7, 1995 - Mobile, AL - QMS, Inc. (NYSE:AQM) today announced that
it has been using a beta version of Novell's Embedded System Technology
(NEST) software as a rapid prototyping tool and has used the software to
develop a key component of an advanced multi-protocol printer interface.
Use of the early version of NEST has allowed QMS to become familiar with
the requirements and features of the software prior to fully integrating
NEST with QMS Crown multitasking network printing architecture. Together,
QMS Crown and NEST technology will give QMS and its customers a clearly
defined migration path to easily add new features and future releases of
Novell's NetWare.

According to Theodore Kearley, QMS Network Product Manager, "QMS is
committed to maintaining a leadership position in NetWare compliant
printing services. The ever increasing complexity of the network
environment coupled with user demands for compatibility, ease-of-use and
increasing functionality dictates a leveraged approach to network print
system development. NEST fits in perfectly with our development strategy
by allowing QMS to continue to offer state-of-the-art NetWare
functionality with a minimum of core code redevelopment. NEST technology
together with our Crown architecture gives QMS a significant competitive
advantage by allowing us to accelerate the development of network ready
print systems while making them easier to install and use."

QMS, a leading provider of network print systems, has significant expertise
in both printing and networking technologies. QMS was one of the first
licensees of a portion of the portable NetWare protocol stack, enabling it
to be among the first printer manufacturers to offer an embedded IPX/SPX
protocol suite and PSERVER and RPRINTER functionality within the print
system. These on board services revolutionized networked printing by
providing all existing NetWare printing services in one small, easy to use
system. Because of these QMS print system firsts it became possible to
print directly from a network, at network speeds, instead of using the
traditional parallel connected printer.

QMS print systems are based on QMS Crown print system architecture, a
multitasking software system which handles job spooling, automatic
emulation selection, compiling and printing. The multitasking elements,
when combined with the ability to spool jobs directly on the printer,
permit the print engine to simultaneously accept and process a number of
jobs from parallel, serial, LocalTalk, Ethernet and/or Token-Ring users
while delivering rich document printing services to each user.

Just as Crown provides advanced multitasking, the recently introduced QMS
CrownNet network interface permits a number of network protocol stacks to
be simultaneously active. A key example of CrownNet's simultaneous
protocol support lies in its ability to accept print jobs from the NetWare
PSERVER and TCP/IP FTP (put) protocol applications at the same time,
simplifying printer usage and speeding throughput. Novell, as a QMS
customer, was a Beta test site for this recently released product.
