Softbridge Basic Language Becomes Industry Standard Scripting Language in
Database Engine/Accounting Packages

Decision of Btrieve Technologies, Inc. to Include SBL in Database Engines
Enhances SBL Position as Industry Leader. Solomon, Platinum, Macola
Already Offering SBL.

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (February 13, 1995)--Mystic River Software, Inc.
today announced that Btrieve Technologies, Inc. (BTI) has licensed
Softbridge Basic Language for use in their line of database engines. "This
development opens exciting new opportunities to ISVs who choose to build
their applications on the foundation of those engines," says Jerry
Bedrick, President of Mystic River. "They now have access to the industry
standard scripting language, which offers them a consistent, transparent
tool at both the front end (the GUI) and the back end (the database)." SBL
is an embeddable version of Basic that becomes a seamless part of
applications, and offers VBA compatibility and OLE automation support.

"As the defacto industry standard, the Btrieve database delivers maximum
programming control to professional programmers," says Bo Holland, BTI's
director of product marketing. "Now we have opened up the programming
possibilities to non-developers; they can easily script database functions
using the industry standard scripting language. This allows effective
distribution of application processing between the client and server for
maximum performance."

Leading Financial Software Vendors Solomon, Platinum, Macola: As Btrieve
Clients Already Using SBL, They Can Offer New Capabilities to End Users

Several accounting software vendors made the decision some time ago to
embed SBL in their applications. They praise Btrieve's decision to go with
the same language, and acknowledge that it moves SBL further toward the
front as the industry standard scripting language. "With Microsoft pushing
VBA as their language of choice, our use of SBL within Solomon IV
leverages our initiative to be the first financial software vendor to
embed SBL," says Gary Harpst, president of Solomon Software in Findlay,
OH. "Solomon IV is optimized to use SQL database technology. Our use of
Btrieve Technologies' Scalable SQL as the SQL database engine for our
client and server editions of Solomon IV enables middle-market businesses
to take advantage of the many benefits of SQL. BTI's recent decision about
SBL is consistent with the trend toward integrating industry-standard
scripting languages into common business objects."

Platinum Software of Irvine, CA has built their applications on the
foundation of the Btrieve database engine "The fact that SBL is now in
Btrieve products enables us to enhance the value of our products," says
Tim McMullen, CTO at Platinum. "We can offer a distributed client-server
environment to our end users, allowing database-intensive operations to
run resident on the database server, as well as distributed across
multiple processors, to maximize performance. In addition, having SBL
integrated into client objects allows the user to customize the
application without access to the source code."

Macola, Inc. in Marion, OH, another one of the first to embed scripting
technology, also cites the appeal of using a language that complies with
industry standards. "Using industry standard tools is important when we
design any product at Macola Software," says John Antjas, vice president
of client/server development for Macola, Inc. "SBL's rising position as an
industry standard has therefore made it an important cornerstone in the
development of our EnVision Series, an advanced client/server accounting
system. Total extensibility and ease of use continue to be our key
directives, and SBL has supported this strategy by providing an elegant
interface to the object-oriented rapid application development
environment. SBL has allowed our developers to build and customize
EnVision with a standard VBA compliant language, while leveraging the
advanced object-oriented architecture of the system."

Platforms and Pricing

Currently available for Windows, Windows NT, and OS/2, SBL will soon be
available for other platforms, including Windows 95, the Macintosh, NLM,
and Unix. Pricing plans are available for both variable rate royalties and
single fees.
