HP INTRODUCES 100VG PCI LAN ADAPTER

HP Also Cuts Prices on 10Base-T ISA Adapters by up to 20 Percent

Palo Alto, California. January 30, 1995 -- Filling out its 100VG-AnyLAN
adapter product line, Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced a PCI
version of its 10/100VG local area network (LAN) adapter. The PCI local
bus provides a key networking performance boost because it operates at the
clock speed of the computer's CPU, which is generally between three to
eight times faster than the ISA or EISA bus' speed.

HP also cut U.S. prices of its ISA 10Base-T adapters by up to 20 percent,
effective Feb. 1.

Introduced for $249 (U.S.), HP's 10/100VG Selectable PCI Adapter (J2585A)
is the industry's lowest price for a 100 megabits-per-second (Mbit)
version of the increasingly popular PCI bus interface. It is expected to
begin shipping March 1. HP's 100VG products provide 10 times the speed and
up to 16 times the throughput of 10Base-T at only twice the price. Fully
compatible with existing network infrastructure, 100VG lets users take
advantage of emerging applications such as multimedia, imaging and
groupware, and improve the performance of existing applications.

This product offering complements HP's 10/100VG ISA and EISA LAN adapters,
which have been shipping since Aug. 1, 1994. They were the industry's
first 100 Mbit Ethernet products based on the emerging IEEE 802.12
standard.

"PCI is essentially the ISA of the future," said Gary McAnally, general
manager of HP's Roseville (Calif.) Networks Division. "By first
introducing ISA and EISA 100VG adapters, we quickly were able to provide
customers with 100 Mbit adapters for the buses they are using today. HP's
VG PCI adapter provides customers with 100 Mbits for the bus they will be
using tomorrow."

Built with an auto-sensing capability, HP's 10/100VG PCI LAN adapters
support 10 Mbit 10Base-T and 100 Mbit 100VG-AnyLAN operation, letting
network managers replace network adapters gradually and switch to
high-speed networking at their convenience. When the 10/100VG adapters
are used in the 10-Mbit mode, they provide full-duplex operation, which
allows data to be sent and received simultaneously. HP's VG set software,
included with all HP 10/100VG adapters, provides configuration and
diagnostic support, eliminating the need for jumpers or switches.

The leading supplier of 10Base-T stackable hubs, HP's Roseville Networks
Division developed 10Base-T and network printing and codeveloped
100VG-AnyLAN. HP's full line of networking products includes AdvanceStack
routers, AdvanceStack 100VG hubs, AdvanceStack 10Base-T hubs, OpenView
network management applications, JetDirect print servers, 10Base-T and
100VG LAN adapters.

States. Product availability and specifications may vary in non-U.S.
markets.
