HP ANNOUNCES LOW-COST, HIGH-CAPACITY MINICARTRIDGE TAPE BACKUP SYSTEM

1.36GB Exceeds Hard-disk Capacity of Vast Majority of Today's PCs

Palo Alto, California. January 31, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
announced a low-cost, high-capacity minicartridge addition to the Jumbo
family of QIC-compatible tape backup systems -- the Jumbo 1400. The new
drive from HP's Colorado Memory Systems division provides 680MB native
capacity on a single minicartridge (1.36GB using data compression). Price
is $429 (U.S.).

This affordable tape backup solution gives advanced PC and entry-level
network users a system with low cost-per-megabyte and fast backup rates,
plus comprehensive backup software for DOS and Windows(tm) environments.
Conformance to QIC-3020-MC industry standards ensures backward-read
compatibility to earlier QIC-40-, QIC-80- and QIC-3010-MC tapes.

"The Jumbo 1400 drive exceeds the hard-disk capacity of the vast majority
of today's PCs," said Robert F. LiVolsi, marketing manager for HP's
Colorado Memory Systems division. "It gives most users -- even advanced PC
users -- significant room for growth and opens the door for increased use
of QIC minicartridge backup systems in network environments."

The Jumbo 1400 is an internal drive that installs in a 3 1/2-inch or 5
1/4-inch half-height bay. Consistent with QIC standards, it can interface
to a PCs floppy-disk controller, however, the system also includes a
separate high-speed controller that takes full advantage of the drive's
maximum data-transfer rate of 2Mb/s and provides backup rates of up to 15
MB/minute. The system also includes one preformatted minicartridge and two
backup software programs -- Colorado Backup for DOS and Colorado Backup
for Windows -- both of which include network compatibility and an
unattended backup scheduler. The Windows backup program also includes a
librarian feature, which is an excellent file-archiving tool that
automatically keeps track of all files backed up on various tapes.

Colorado Memory Systems, a division of HP, is located in Loveland, Colo. It
manufactures a wide range of tape backup solutions and accessories,
including Jumbo, Trakker, PowerTape and PowerDAT backup systems. According
to Dataquest reports, Colorado was the clear market leader in
minicartridge drives in 1994. Colorado Memory Systems sells its products
through a network of computer OEMs, major national distributors and retail
outlets.
