January 1995 -- The Foundation Center launched its new World Wide Web
information service on December 30. This service is the first step in the
Foundation Center's initiative to distribute timely funding information
directly to nonprofit organizations, grantmakers, libraries, the media and
other interested users via their desktop computers.

The information currently available through this new service includes a
directory of the Center's five libraries and more than 200 cooperating
collections, a catalog of Center publications. and the Center's annual
report. Also featured is Philanthropy News Digest. a service developed
specifically for Internet publication. The Digest provides summaries of
news articles on philanthropy from the major print media.

The Foundation Center's new information service extends the Center's reach
to audiences in remote locations and offers users a flexible and
convenient way to access information. "During this fourth week of
operation, 200 World Wide Web users per day each viewed an average of SIX
documents," reports Sherry Seward, Vice President of Marketing and Product
Development "We're very encouraged by this positive response to our new
online service and look forward to developing the service further to meet
the funding information needs of the nonprofit field.

Ultimately, the Center will offer a full range of information services to
grantseekers and grantmakers via the Internet and other online networks.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has made a lead grant in support of
network development.

During 1995, the Center will extend the Internet information service to
include Gopher-based access. According to Seward, the Center will be
working actively with its nonprofit audiences to provide additional
services, including offering assistance to grantmakers to make their
funding information and publications available online. Future plans for
the Center's online information service include access to the Center's
data on grantmakers and their grants.
