EtherHub 1500 Offers Intelligent Workgroup Management for As Little As $44
Per Port

Accton's New Stackable Hub Offers Versatility with Multi-Segment
Architecture, SmartWatch Diagnostics, and Built-In SNMP Agent

February 6, 1995 -- SAN JOSE, Calif.--Accton Technology Corporation today
announced that its new EtherHub 1500 Series, a comprehensive LAN
integration strategy that gives network architects a simple,
cost-effective way to create SNMP-manageable workgroups, is now ready for
market. The EtherHub-16i (EH-1501) is a 16-port 10BASE-T hub capable of
supporting a multi-segment Ethernet architecture The EtherHub-16mi
(EH-1502) is a 16-port Ethernet hub with a built-in SNMP agent capable of
providing Simple Network Management Protocol support for up to 10 EtherHub
units or 170 ports at only $44 per port. For a limited time, the
EtherHub-16mi includes AccView/Open, Accton's Windows-based network
management software that provides total mouse-driven control over EtherHub
connections.

"The EtherHub 1500 Series marks the next step in the evolution of Accton's
EtherHub products," explains Al Gounod, Director of Sales for Accton USA.
"It's the ideal solution for larger workgroup environments that continue
to expand to the point where network management becomes critical. Network
architects can design their networks to support up to 16 users at a time,
then add SNMP to support the entire infrastructure by adding the
EtherHub-16mi. And with the help of AccView/Open and new features such as
our SmartWatch LED monitoring system, troubleshooting connectivity
problems is a snap."

"After evaluating hubs from several manufacturers, we decided to work with
the EtherHub 1500 Series," said Bob Pasdar, President of PasTek
Information, a network solution provider based in Palisades Park, N.J. "We
really like the fact that you can install up to nine EtherHub-16i units at
various points around the network and manage them all from one
EtherHub-16mi without having to stack the hubs. In comparison to other
manufacturers, Accton's EtherHub 1500 line offers us a feature-rich,
manageable hub at nonintelligent hub prices, and we like the fact that it
comes with its own network management software. We are currently using a
combination of Accton's AccView/Open and HP OpenView as a network
management platform, but we can see how customers gain a real advantage
with AccView/Open since it gives you the same network management
capability as more expensive software packages, and you don't need a Sun
SPARCstation to run it."

New Features Make EtherHub Versatile and Easy to Manage

The EtherHub 1500 Series features a multi-segment architecture that
improves network efficiency and bandwidth utilization. This multi-segment
architecture allows multiple EtherHub segments to be connected in a single
stack, thus creating three or more collision domains for greater
flexibility and load balancing. In fact, by creating three collision
domains users can achieve an aggregate throughput of up to 30 Mbps. Up to
10 hubs can be interconnected across 100 meters for single segment
applications.

Both EtherHubs also come with Accton's exclusive front panel SmartWatch LED
diagnostic system. SmartWatch is controlled by an internal CPU that drives
an array of 58 color-coded LEDs, giving network managers meaningful data
about the workgroup's operational status at a glance, without having to
rely on SNMP software. These LEDs indicate real-time status of power; CPU
activity; inter-hub connection status; partitions; and twisted-pair
connections, traffic, and network partitions, all at a glance. Accton's
SmartWatch provides much more comprehensive data than other LED hub
displays. For example, the color-coded bar graph displays network
utilization and collision rates, rather than merely displaying active
ports.

Both the EtherHub-16i and the EtherHub-16mi are "hot-swappable" to
facilitate maintenance without incurring any noticeable system downtime.
Both the EtherHub-16i and the EtherHub-16mi have redundant port links,
with 16 10BASE-T ports, and either a BNC, AUI, or fiber-optic port, for
backup connectivity. The EtherHub-16mi also feature a backup SNMP agent so
the network administrator doesn't have to worry about losing SNMP support
capabilities.

The Etherhub-16i

The EtherHub-16i is a 16-port, multi-segment 10BASE-T hub. In a standalone
configuration, it can be used to interconnect from two to 17 workstations
into a single workgroup LAN. These hubs can be connected to other
compatible hubs to form larger networks or they can be stacked with other
EtherHub16i concentrators and an EtherHub-16mi to form a single
SNMP-managed LAN.

Up to ten EtherHub-16i units can be stacked into a single network using
twisted-pair cable interconnecting up to 170 workstations. It comes with
16 RJ-45 ports to support 10BASE-T connections, either a 10BASE2 (BNC),
10BASE5 (AUI), or fiber-optic port to connect the hub to the backbone, and
a standard 10BASE-T I/O FlexBus link.

The EtherHub-16i retails for $699, or about $44 per port.

EtherHub-16mi

The EtherHub-16mi can also serve as a standalone 16-port 10BASE-T hub. Yet
the EtherHub-16mi includes an on-board SNMP agent capable of adding SNMP
intelligence to an entire LAN infrastructure.

The SNMP agent incorporated into the EtherHub-16mi is capable of managing
up to 10 interconnected EtherHubs. SNMP data can be shared across 100
meters per single segment application using twisted pair cabling. The
network configuration itself is "stack-and-play" thanks to the system's
automatic hub ID and automatic terminator technology. The system can also
be configured manually through the panel.

The retail price for the EtherHub-16mi is $1,299, or about $81 per
SNMP-managed port.

AccView/Open

To administer the entire EtherHub 1500 System, Accton is including
AccView/Open, the company's Windows-based network management software, for
a limited time. AccView/Open allows users to create their own network map
to click on specific devices and ports to view the status of the network.
Using AccView/Open, the user can activate and deactivate EtherHub ports.
AccView/Open also allows the user to set alarms that are triggered when
network traffic exceeds a specified threshold. It also includes a unified
alert log that combines all the network alerts into a single log that can
be exported to any Windows-based database, spreadsheet, or word processor
for analysis.

AccView/Open is compatible with Novell's NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager,
and Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups so users can be logged into the
network and perform other tasks while still monitoring the network using
AccView/Open. It has a non-dedicated packet driver interface so that a
single workstation can be logged in to a network while running the
program, and can support any ODI, IPX, NDIS, or PD-based network.

AccView/Open is included free with the purchase of any EtherHub-16mi for
the next three months. It normally sells separately for $495.

The entire EtherHub 1500 Series is available now.
