NEW ENTRY-LEVEL ALPHA WORKSTATION IS PRICE/PERFORMANCE LEADER; VOLUME SALES
EXPECTED THROUGH CHANNEL PARTNERS

MAYNARD, Mass. -- February 23, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
unveiled a new entry-level, 64-bit AlphaGeneration workstation -- the
AlphaStation 200 4/100 workstation. The workstation is a price/performance
leader and will be popular with customers who want an inexpensive but
powerful system running the UNIX operating system.

The system supports three operating systems -- DEC OSF/1 (Digital's version
of UNIX), Windows NT, and OpenVMS -- so customers can choose the
application and operating system best suited to run their businesses. The
system also incorporates the high-performance PCI bus--a standard in the
PC industry that enables customers to purchase a wide range of peripherals
from the thousands of vendors who service the PC market.

"With the new systems, Digital continues to offer workstations with the
best price/performance of any comparable systems on the market," said
Philippe Ribeyre, vice president, Alpha Workstation Business Segment. "The
new workstation provides extraordinary value by combining high-end
performance with low-cost design features."

Volume Sales through Channels Partners

Digital will sell the workstations directly, and in volume through its
channel partners. Digital's channel partners are enthusiastic about
selling the new products. For example, Robert Braverman, vice president,
marketing, Avnet Computer, said "Digital has been cooperative in working
with its partners. Digital has also priced its new products in a way that
benefits us, and has advertised the systems widely to build demand. People
are regarding Digital as the price/performance leader in the workstation
and server markets. Avnet is seeing a double-digit increase in sales of
Digital's products over last year."

Fastest Low-Cost Workstation

With CPU performance of 100 MHz, and SPECint92 and SPECfp92 performance of
74.59 and 95.23 respectively, the AlphaStation 200 4/100 workstation
offers customers up to twice the performance of entry-level competitive
workstations.

It supports leading applications in technical markets, including MCAD,
ECAD, GIS, and CASE; and commercial markets, including desktop publishing,
office productivity, and database applications.

Outstanding Investment Protection

"With the new workstation, customers can rest assured that their computing
investments in Digital's systems are protected," added Ribeyre. "Digital
will offer inexpensive upgrades as new and more powerful CPU chips are
introduced to meet customers' needs."

The system comes with an industry leading, three-year warranty featuring
on-site service with next-day response for the first year.
