DIGITAL TO PROVIDE MEDIA SERVER TECHNOLOGY FOR AMERITECH DEPLOYMENT

Digital's Media Server Platform To Deliver Interactive Services to Millions
of Homes in Mid-Western U.S.

MAYNARD, Mass. -- February 21, 1995 -- In preparation for the largest
mass-market deployment of interactive video services to date, Digital
Equipment Corporation and Ameritech announced that they have signed a
broad-based technology agreement, under which Digital will provide its
media server platform for Ameritech's interactive services deployment.
Today's agreement will provide Digital with as much as $40 million in
product and service revenues over the next five years.

Digital's media servers platform will be a central component of Ameritech's
new network that will deliver movies-on-demand, home- shopping and other
interactive entertainment services. The Ameritech network is expected to
become operational in the first midwestern communities by the end of this
year.

According to Sultan Zia, general manager of Digital's Video and Interactive
Information Services group, "The combination of Digital's high-performance
media servers and Ameritech's networking expertise will change the way
millions of consumers spend at-home leisure time -- shopping, accessing
information and watching movies." Zia added that by eliminating trials and
moving directly to deployments, Ameritech is accelerating the delivery of
available interactive video services and increasing the need for
programming. "In anticipating larger markets for their programs, content
providers will produce content sooner, thereby providing consumers with
more choices and creating more demand."

Digital's media server platform has already been selected by more cable and
telephone companies worldwide than any other video server provider. The
company's Video and Interactive Information Architecture provides a
full-service solution for delivering interactive video applications over
many types of networks. Currently the industry's only second-generation
media server, Digital's platform features object-oriented middleware that
links the world's fastest server systems -- based on 64-bit Alpha
processors -- with the company's StorageWorks disk arrays and digital tape
library systems. This architecture also provides network, subscriber, and
billing management capabilities in an open framework that supports
third-party and legacy applications.

Ameritech (NYSE: AIT), one of the world's largest communications companies,
provides local phone, data and video services for more than 13 million
customers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The company
is currently developing new information, entertainment and interactive
services for homes, businesses and governments worldwide. Nearly 1 million
investors hold Ameritech shares.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software
and services, together with industry- focused solutions from business
partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
