TruScan CS400 Large Document Color Scanner Includes Real-time Color
Selection

January 31, 1995 -- Herndon, VA: Large document color scanning enters a new
era with the introduction of Vidar's new TruScan CS400 Large Document
Color Scanner. Using the latest tri-color CCDs, this new scanner outputs
24-bit full color images at 400 dpi from documents up to 36" wide. The
CS400 can also separate the image into user-defined colors, or groups of
colors, thus allowing the user to select only the elements of interest
from a full spectrum original.

Many applications require the extraction of one or more specific colors
from the original document-dropping out a colored background grid, for
example, picking out highways from an atlas, or isolating red-lined
annotations from an architectural drawing. The TruScan CS400 handles these
requirements and is the only large document color scanner on the market
that lists for less than $40K.

From a pie chart display of the spectrum the user can choose colors, or
groups of colors to be captured. This allows the as-scanned full color
image to be compressed to any desired degree--from 24 bits down to 8 or 4
bits per pixel, for example. The user can even select one or more color
groups, each to be output as a one-bit-per-pixel image Once the color
definitions have been established, extraction is performed in real time as
the document is scanned.

Like other Vidar large document scanners, the CS400 is distinguished by its
high performance and quality. Depending on the color separation mode
selected, a typical E-size document may be scanned in less than one
minute. In addition to full color and selected color scanning, the CS400
also outputs the traditional grayscale and bi-level formats.

TruScan CS400 lists for $39,995 and comes complete with SCSI interface and
Microsoft Windows compatible software. Software compatible for the major
UNIX platforms is also available.

In addition to the TruScan line of monochrome and color large document
scanners, Vidar manufactures X-ray Film Digitizers for medical and
scientific applications, and an automatic Aperture Card Scanner for
document management applications.
