Canadian Agency will not require license for video games on cable TV

OTTAWA -- The Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission
has announced that video games operators will be able to offer cable
television services without licenses. The CRTC made the ruling in response
to a request by Sega of Canada Inc. that it be allowed to distribute a
video games service through cable television providers.

The CRTC will require, however, that video games operators adhere to
certain criteria, including the private broadcasting industry's violence
code. The video games must also be rated and include information on a
game's suitability for children. The programming must originate in Canada,
and the service cannot run advertising. The CRTC will handle public
complaints on a case-by-case basis.
