COMPAQ BROADENS NOTEBOOK MANUFACTURING IN JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH
INVENTEC

HOUSTON, February 2, 1995 -- Underscoring its goal to broaden its range of
portable computing products, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today
announced the formation of a joint development agreement with The Inventec
Group of Taiwan. Compaq and Inventec, working together on design and
engineering, are developing a new line of Compaq notebook computers to be
manufactured by Inventec and available later this year.

"This agreement enables us to expand our engineering resources, ultimately
broadening Compaq's family of portable products," said Hugh Barnes, senior
vice president and general manager, Portable PC Division. "Inventec brings
to the relationship an excellent blend of talent and resources to develop
innovative new products -- an excellent complement to Compaq's own pool of
resources. As part of our ongoing effort to deliver a broad range of high
quality products designed to meet customers needs, Compaq will continue to
examine these types of alliances that enable us to extend or enhance our
own capabilities and resources."

"We are very proud to have Compaq as our new co-development partner in this
new line of portable products," said Inventec Group President Richard Lee.
"Through our joint development efforts, we are committed to providing
Compaq and its loyal customers with superb products."

Compaq will manage all design, engineering, manufacturing and test
procedures with Inventec, assuring customers of the Compaq quality and
reliability they expect from the Company. Compaq will to continue to
manufacture its existing portable products -- the Compaq Aero, Contura and
LTE Elite families -- in its Houston, Texas; Erskine, Scotland; and
Singapore factories.

In a similar relationship, Compaq worked for five years with Citizen of
Japan to design and manufacture the Compaq LTE Lite notebook products.
