SYBASE ANNOUNCES ARCHITECTURE-BASED CONSULTING SERVICES FOR ENTERPRISE
CLIENT/SERVER

Kodak and AT&T Confirm the Benefits of new IT and Business Architecture
Consulting Services

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 23, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced two new architecture-based
consulting services that enable customers tc plan and deploy optimal
client/server systems. With the introduction of these services, Sybase
becomes the first major software vendor to offer a full complement of
consulting services for client/server, ranging from enterprise-level
business evaluation and design to system deployment and support. The new
services are:

* Sybase Architecture Framework for the Enterprise (SAFE), a five-phase
process for the rapid design of information system architectures that
preserve investments in legacy systems, and;

* Enterprise Work Architecture (EWA), a powerful enterprise modeling
technique that enables managers to organize enterprise capabilities and
drive dramatic business performance gains.

Sybase believes that these services, which can be used together or
separately, give customers the clearest blueprints yet for making
significant improvements to their enterprise-wide business performance.
Several companies, including AT&T and Kodak, are already using these
services to improve their businesses.

In addition, Sybase continues to team with Open Solutions Partners such as
Price Waterhouse, Andersen Consulting, Deloitte and Touche, EDS and SHL
Systemhouse to provide multi-vendor consulting solutions, should customers
require them.

"Most of the components needed for client/server -- hardware, software and
networking -- already exist. But as more mainstream customers contemplate
enterprise-wide client/server, they are demanding a clear blueprint
showing how to get there, including how their business architecture fits
with the information system," said Michael Bealmear, vice president of
worldwide consulting at Sybase. "Customers don't just want point solutions
-- they want tools that enable them to engineer their whole enterprise and
continuously change to respond to competitive challenges."

SAFE and EWA are offered, respectively, through Sybase's consulting
practices, the Professional Services business unit and Sybase's OASiS
subsidiary. These organizations comprise more than 750 consultants working
on more than 1,000 customer projects each year. In addition to SAFE and
EWA, Sybase offers a range of services including business process
re-engineering, application development, education and product specialist
consulting.

SAFE Builds Information Architectures

SAFE provides a concise blueprint for planning and implementing
client/server systems, encompassing such key factors as business goals,
data, and technology support. The methodology is streamlined and
incremental, enabling a company to quickly design and deploy systems,
evaluate their effectiveness and then repeat the process with additional
client/server projects.

SAFE was designed to address the specific challenges of client/server
migration, especially how enterprises can preserve legacy investments
while moving to more flexible architectures. By comparison, many other
methodologies are derived from older, host-based methodologies and are not
specifically designed to address the challenges of multiple vendor
environments and migration. Perhaps most importantly, each step of SAFE
links information system design with the organization's business goals and
structures, ensuring maximum bottom-line results.

"We took the elements that have repeatedly led to successful client/server
installations for our customers over the past five years and codified
them," said Steve Sharp, vice president of Sybase worldwide professional
services. "Whether it's a client/server system built from scratch or a
plan to link a mainframe into a more flexible client/server system, SAFE
shows customers how to get there. It can help enterprises beat the
competition to market using client/server."

Kodak Benefits From SAFE

Eastman Kodak Company used SAFE to design the information architecture that
forms the foundation for its Kodak Picture Exchange (KPX), an on-line
service used by ad agencies and others to locate stock photography.
On-line services are growing quickly, and Kodak wanted to be the first to
market with its on-line picture archival system. The company started
designing the information architecture for KPX later than a competitor,
but by using SAFE, Kodak was able to get KPX to market first.

"SAFE was instrumental in getting our client/server system designed and
implemented faster than the competition," said Randall Olson, manager of
Kodak's Image Management Platform Center. "The Sybase consultants who
helped us were absolutely top-notch."

EWA Builds Business Architectures

The second new offering is EWA, a methodology and set of tools from
Sybase's OASiS subsidiary that enables the construction of a detailed
blueprint showing how an enterprise can improve its performance.

Using EWA, business executives from the board-level on down can examine and
redesign the organization, including such factors as business processes,
organizational skills and roles, information needs and how the enterprise
fulfills customer needs. Based on this comprehensive model, executives and
their management teams can prioritize reengineering initiatives, set
enterprise-wide performance goals and identify 'quick wins' for business
performance improvement.

EWA provides a powerful front-end to business re-engineering programs in
that it takes a broader view, enabling executives to examine the
performance and operations of the whole enterprise and identify the areas
where the greatest return on re-engineering investment can be made.

"Since our founding in 1986, we've consulted on more than 1,000 performance
improvement projects for a wide variety of clients including world leaders
in telecommunications, financial services and petrochemicals," said Wilf
Eaton, president of OASiS. "Armed with this knowledge, we were able to
take the next step and create EWA, which makes traditional re-engineering
even more effective by placing it in the perspective of the whole
enterprise, helping to prioritize the areas that benefit the most from
change."

AT&T Benefits From EWA

Customer feedback has been strong. "EWA has given us the confidence to
succeed through focused process and system change," said Doug Lewis, chief
information officer for the Network Systems Group at AT&T. "We have been
sufficiently impressed by the EWA methodology that we are deploying it
throughout the Network Systems Group to develop the blueprint for our
business performance improvement programs."

Enterprise Consulting Services

In addition to SAFE and EWA, Sybase offers a full range of performance
improvement services to meet customers' computing and business
re-engineering needs. These include:

* Business Process Re-engineering -- With a world-class track record of
reengineering blue chip organizations, OASiS provides enlightened, proven
techniques for evaluating and streamlining business processes.

* Application Development -- The Sybase Development Framework (SDF)
provides a framework, specifically designed for client/server, that helps
customers plan and build distributed applications.

* Education -- Sybase offers more than 120 classes, ranging from C and UNIX
programming to business re-engineering. Sybase education includes the
SKILS interactive multimedia family of computer-based and video-based
self-study products and the ASEP authorized training partner program.

* Product Specialization -- Sybase's Advanced Services Group provides full
support for SYBASE products including software installation and
implementation, performance tuning and general training.

Open and Flexible Partnerships

A key to Sybase's services is flexibility. As with Sybase's technology, the
company allows customers to mix, match or tailor service to meet specific
needs. Sybase and Open Solutions Partners (VARs, ISVs and SIs) commonly
team to provide "best of breed" solutions.

"We'll do whatever it takes to make a customer successful," said Bealmear.
"Unlike other vendors, we don't force customers to use Sybase for all of
their service needs, even though we certainly offer the full complement of
services. In addition, we actively empower our Open Solutions Partners
through robust Sybase training, certification and "Sybase has proven to be
a cooperative and productive partner on the projects in which we've both
worked," said Mike Reuschel, Partner at Price Waterhouse LLP. "They take
the best aspects of client/server -- delivering best of breed solutions to
customers -- and apply them to their consulting practices."

Pricing and Availability

SAFE, EWA and other performance improvement services are available by
contracting with Sybase and OASiS consultants. Prices vary according to
the scope of the project. In addition, the full EWA methodology can be
licensed during or after a business architecture assignment, enabling
customers to use this approach themselves for continuous performance
improvement.
