BELLSOUTH CHOOSES SYBASE FOR INTERACTIVE TELEVISION TRIAL

SYBASE Intermedia Software To Support BellSouth Interactive Television
Trial

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 16, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced that
BellSouth has selected the SYBASE Intermedia software products to support
its upcoming video services trial in Chamblee, GA. Sybase's Intermedia
software will be used to author, deliver, and manage, interactive consumer
services over a network that will pass 12,000 homes. The trial will seek
to provide a wide array of analog and digital interactive services,
including video-on-demand and interactive education. The contract includes
the Intermedia products SYBASE Intermedia Server, Gain Momentum, and Gain
Interplay products, as well as design and implementation services from
Sybase's Worldwide Professional Services (WWPS) organization.

Sybase entered the interactive consumer market in May, 1994, when it
announced the SYBASE Intermedia architecture, which has since been chosen
by four major telecommunications and cable television companies for their
video services trials. In addition to BellSouth, Sybase has entered into
agreements to supply its Intermedia software to Southern New England
Telephone (SNET), Singapore Telecom, and ICTV for use in the Cox Cable
trial.

For deployment of its interactive trial, BellSouth will use all SYBASE
Intermedia products, specifically: authoring of multimedia applications
with Sybase's Gain Momentum, delivery of these applications on
Scientific-Atlanta's PowerTV set top operating system using Sybase's Gain
Interplay, and management of a Hewlett-Packard (HP) MediaStream Server
hardware environment using the SYBASE Intermedia Server.

"We're delighted to have Sybase join BellSouth's technical and marketing
trial in Chamblee. A key part of our trial will be the testing of the
latest in new technologies, and we're looking forward to Sybase's strong
contribution," said William F. Reddersen, senior vice president for
BellSouth.

Sybase Provides Software Solution for Interactive Television

Sybase's Intermedia Server will be used to manage the critical processes of
accessing video content and interfacing video servers with BellSouth's
digital network. In addition, Sybase Professional Services will work with
BellSouth to design the software architecture for the trial and support
the authoring of interactive service applications.

"BellSouth has taken a leadership position in defining how interactive
services will be delivered into the home," said Bob Epstein, co-founder
and executive vice president at Sybase. "We are pleased to be able to work
with BellSouth and its technology partners to provide our Intermedia
products and services in support of this effort."

Pending approval of the trial application by the Federal Communications
Commission, BellSouth plans to begin implementation in mid-1995.

Sybase Intermedia

The SYBASE Intermedia product architecture will provide an open and
cost-effective environment for businesses to deliver interactive consumer
services. SYBASE Intermedia provides the most scalable and interoperable
software architecture for interactive multimedia systems on the market
today. The SYBASE Intermedia products, Gain Momentum, Gain Interplay, and
Intermedia Server are designed to provide a modular end-to-end
architecture for authoring, delivering, and managing interactive
multimedia applications, content, and services.

The Intermedia Server is based on Sybase's SQL Server RDBMS technology
providing two critical components: control and message integration. The
Intermedia Server stores and manages information about multimedia data
objects (such as names and locations of movies or product descriptions),
and provides routing of requests to and from the various components
(set-top box, video server, and back-end business systems for billing and
subscriptions) .

Gain Momentum is a powerful, object-oriented, multimedia authoring
environment for developing visual, intuitive, and entertaining
applications. In addition, Gain Momentum authored applications can access
and manipulate data from SYBASE and other databases, allowing customers to
integrate multimedia applications with their existing and future business
systems.

Gain Interplay is a software player that is designed to allow interactive
multimedia applications to be played on low-cost, low-memory, hardware
devices such as television settop boxes and home personal computers. The
Gain Interplay product is planned to be available on a variety of set-top
boxes such as Scientific-Atlanta's PowerTV, and on Windows-based personal
computers.
