SYBASE TO SUPPORT ITV TRIALS IN SINGAPORE

Singapore Telecom Chooses SYBASE Intermedia Software for Interactive
Television Trial

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 5, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced that
Singapore Telecom will use the Sybase Intermedia software architecture for
an interactive television (ITV) trial in Singapore. In the trial,
Singapore Telecom will offer interactive services such as
movies-on-demand, interactive news and education, as well as home
shopping. The deal marks the company's first overseas Sybase Intermedia
agreement and follows on the heels of announcements that SYBASE software
has been chosen by SNET and Cox Cable for their . interactive television
trials.

The trial is scheduled to begin in Q3, 1995, in the Republic of Singapore.
To support the trial, Singapore Telecom is working with a technology
consortium . This consortium consists of Mitsui & Company, the consortium
leader; Fujitsu, which will provide overall systems integration and the
network infrastructure; Hewlett-Packard, which will supply its MediaStream
Server; Philips, which will provide its set top boxes; and Sybase, whose
Intermedia products will run on the video server and set top boxes.

"After a thorough evaluation of software vendors, we selected Sybase based
on its superior technology for bringing interactive services to the home,"
commented Allen Lew, project director, video-on-demand trial, at Singapore
Telecom. "I am confident that Sybase's Intermedia software, together with
technology from our other partners, will allow us to build one of the most
advanced systems for delivering and managing interactive services into the
home."

Sybase entered the multimedia market in 1992, when it began shipping its
multimedia authoring tool Gain Momentum. In May 1993, Sybase introduced a
complete architecture for authoring, delivering, and managing interactive
consumer services: Sybase Intermedia. The Sybase Intermedia Server and
Gain Interplay are available to customers on an end-user and OEM basis,
and are scheduled to be generally available in mid-1995; the Gain Momentum
authoring product is available now. Sybase has also formed strategic
relationships with hardware, software, telecommunications, and content
providers which include ICTV, Hewlett-Packard, Scientific Atlanta, SNET,
and TCI.

The open and modular Sybase Intermedia architecture will provide the
software infrastructure for the trial. Sybase Intermedia includes the
Intermedia Server, Gain Momentum, and Gain Interplay, and will be used to
author, deliver and manage ITV applications and integrate these
applications with Singapore Telecom's back-end subscriber and accounting
systems. In addition to working with Singapore Telecom on the ITV trial,
Sybase also provides the company with relational database management
software to manage key business applications at Singapore Telecom,
including the company's cellular billing system.

Information Highway in Singapore

The ITV trial conducted by Singapore Telecom is part of a larger government
initiative, called "IT 2000". The goal of IT 2000 is to ensure continued
competitiveness of the Singapore economy by building a leading-edge,
broadband communications infrastructure and interactive services.

Singapore Telecom is a U.S. $28 billion (U.S.) telecommunications company
and a major provider of telecommunications services and television
broadcast services in the Republic of Singapore (population: 3.2
million).

Two important factors are expected to drive the success of the interactive
television trial in Singapore. First, the population density and urban
nature of Singapore will make it more cost-efficient to implement the
network infrastructure necessary for the trial. Second, Singapore's
telecommunications infrastructure ranks first in the world, according to
the World Competitiveness Report, an organization based in Geneva,
Switzerland. In addition the Singapore government recognizes the
importance of a national information infrastructure and will work to
eliminate many of the regulatory hurdles that exist in the United States.

"We are very proud to have been chosen by Singapore Telecom to provide the
software infrastructure for its interactive television trial," said Noel
Leca, vice president, Intermedia Products Group at Sybase. "This gives us
a great opportunity to work with one of the most advanced
telecommunications providers in the world and contribute to a strategic
interactive television trial in the Asia Pacific region."

SYBASE Intermedia Software

With Intermedia, Sybase provides the only open and modular family of
software products designed for authoring and delivering interactive
multimedia services on the market today. The Intermedia products, in
conjunction with video processor hardware such as HP's MediaStream Server
and set-top boxes such as Philips', provide a complete environment for
authoring, delivering, and managing interactive multimedia applications
and services.

The Intermedia Server is based on Sybase's SQL Server RDBMS technology and
provides two critical components: control and message integration. The
control component stores and manages information about multimedia data
objects (such as names and locations of movies or product descriptions).
The message routing component provides routing of requests to and from the
various components (set-top box, video server, and back-end business
systems for billing and subscriptions).

Gain Momentum is a powerful object-oriented multimedia authoring
environment for developing visual, intuitive, and entertaining
applications. In addition, Gain Momentum can access and manipulate data
from SYBASE and other databases, allowing customers to integrate
multimedia applications with their existing and future business systems.

Gain Interplay is a software tool that allows interactive multimedia
applications to be played on low-cost, small-memory, hardware devices such
as the television set-top boxes and home personal computers that will be
used to access a variety of multimedia offerings. The Gain Interplay
product will be available on a variety of set-top boxes, including
Phillips' CD-I, Scientific-Atlanta's PowerTV, Hewlett-Packard's Kayak, and
on Windows-based personal computers.

Hewlett-Packard MediaStream Server

The HP MediaStream Server is designed around a brand-new architecture, a
Video Transfer Engine, to optimize it for streaming large quantities of
video data across networks. By focusing on moving video data rather than
processing it (the method large mainframe and supercomputers use), the HP
MediaStream Server provides high performance interactive video on demand
at a low per video stream cost. The large scale server design is
expandable from 100 to 10,000 streams to adapt to increasing subscriber
needs. It features an open-system design strategy, allowing users to mix
and match other system components.
