SYBASE SHIPS MICROSOFT WINDOWS-BASED SQL SERVER MANAGER

Customers Applaud SQL Server Manager's Ease-of-Use and Control over Local
and Remote SYBASE SQL Servers

EMERYVILLE, CA., January 12, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced the general availability of SQL
Server Manager, a new Windows-based database administration (DBA) tool
that simplifies the control of local and remote SYBASE SQL Server systems.
SQL Server Manager received praise from beta site customers for its
easy-to-use graphical interface and improved operation capabilities. SQL
Server Manager was in beta since August 1994, and began shipping on
December 21, 1994 as a stand-alone product and as a bundled component of
SYBASE WorkGroup SQL Server 10.

The predecessor to the SQL Server Manager, called SA Companion is a
character-based DBA tool that has been shipping on the UNIX platform for
the past four years. SQL Server Manager is optimized for departmental
environments, and it is the first in a family of scalable systems
management solutions that will be available in 1995.

Patricia Dames, beta tester and senior systems analyst at Sonat Marketing
in Houston, said, "SQL Server Manager is an extremely powerful product,
combining the responsiveness and functionality not found in other
products. Its intuitive interface and ability to control local and remote
database management functions enables Sonat Marketing to more efficiently
manage SQL Server."

Local and Remote Control, Intuitive Administration

The SQL Server Manager administration desktop is a central point from which
systems administrators can connect to and manage any SQL Server. This
improved control makes it easier to manage both local and remote database
servers. Systems administrators can set up and reconfigure servers; add or
delete databases, users, objects, and devices; initiate backup; and enable
or disable disk mirroring from one screen. The ability to manage from a
centralized location means fewer administrators are required to manage
multiple server locations, saving money, effort, and training time.

SQL Server Manager adds significant new ease-of-use features including a
Windows graphical user interface, intuitive database component icons, and
easy-to-use "drag and drop" operations. With SQL Server Manager,
experienced and novice administrators can configure and control simple and
complex environments without having to know SQL syntax or follow elaborate
procedures. Its intuitive graphical user interface helps systems
administrators understand the structure of the SQL Server environment and
identify and resolve problems. Systems managers can quickly become
productive SQL Server administrators, able to rapidly address the demand
of business-critical client/server systems.

"Sybase is aggressively committed to developing systems management
solutions that maximize our customers' investment in SQL Server and ensure
smooth business operations," said Skip Glass, vice president of product
and channel marketing at Sybase. "Feedback from beta sites has been
overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing our strategy to deliver
internally-developed systems management solutions that add value to our
RDBMS environments."

Sybase in Systems Management

Database systems management is one of Sybase's four key areas of product
focus, which also include: relational database servers, interoperability
software, and development tools. Sybase has been offering database systems
management products since 1990 with its initial release of SA Companion.
In addition to shipping SQL Server Manager in 1995, Sybase is on schedule
to ship its Enterprise SQL Server Manager in Q1 and SQL Server Monitor in
Q2. SQL Server Monitor is an easy-to-use graphical tool that helps isolate
problems with all SQL Server systems within one site and fine-tune them
for optimal performance.

Enterprise SQL Server Manager is the industry's first enterprise-level
database administration product optimized for one-screen control of an
unlimited number of distributed database servers.

SQL Server Manager Pricing and Availability

SQL Server Manager is available immediately on the Microsoft-Windows
platform. Existing SA Companion customers will receive SQL Server Manager
as a regular maintenance upgrade. Pricing for new customers will range
from $400 to $4,000 per server, based on the number of users supported.
SQL Server Manager will also be bundled with all versions of Workgroup SQL
Server 10. The cost of SQL Server Manager can be applied to a future
upgrade toward Sybase's Enterprise SQL Server Manager product.

SQL Server Manager for Windows is a client product and will manage any
server running on SQL Server 10. The minimum system configuration for SQL
Server Manager is an IBM 486-based PC with MS-Windows 3.1, DOS 6.2, and 8
MB of available memory.
