Add Rule-Based Components to Windows Applications

January 18, 1995 - STOW, MA--The new 3.0 release of Cogent Prolog features
a Logic Server API (application program interface) enabling Windows
programmers to easily add the reasoning power of Prolog to conventional
applications.

Dennis Merritt, lead developer of Cogent 3.0, explained "We believe
embedded Prolog is an ideal tool for adding rule-based modules to Windows
tools and applications. Prolog can readily be used to enhance any program
with logic services such as: problem diagnosis & resolution,
configuration/tuning, planning & evaluation, intelligent advice, and
language parsing."

Because today's increasingly complex applications have a greater need for
rule-based components, Cogent Prolog 3.0 is designed to be easily
integrated with Windows and DOS applications, offering plug-in, rule-based
services for C, C++, Visual Basic, PowerBuilder, Access, dBase and many
other development tools.

The integration is achieved through the new Logic Server API which lets you
access a LogicBase of rules as easily as you access a database today. The
result is a manageable, well-behaved and predictable interface that makes
it possible to enhance any application with rule-based components.

The Logic Server API also lets you mold Cogent Prolog to your
applications--accessing your data, calling your code and linking to your
other libraries and interfaces. This allows C/C++ programmers to extend
the Cogent Prolog language to directly access GUI tool kits, database
APIs, communications/networks, multimedia or any of the other facilities
available to the C/C++ programmer. For example, you can add functions to
retrieve records from an SQL database, or functions that invoke features
of the Windows SDK (software development kit).

Prolog components are written, tested and debugged using the Windows-based
Interactive Development Environment (IDE). Cogent Prolog is a
full-featured, Edinburgh-standard (non-typed) Prolog development system
and, in addition to the IDE, includes a compiler, interpreter (listener),
debugger, Logic Server API static and dynamic libraries, and royalty-free,
distributable runtime.

The full Cogent Prolog development system for Windows and DOS is $298. Both
16-bit and 32-bit (extended) DOS modes are supported. A Windows NT version
is under development. Cogent Prolog is also available for the Alpha under
OSF/1 or OpenVMS.

In addition to Cogent Prolog, Amzi! offers an interactive Prolog tutorial,
an expert systems tutorial with full source code prototypes, books,
training and consulting.
