PCI Unveils Bridge Spec

The PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group released on November 21,
1994, a bridge specification designed to let current passive ISA-backplane
systems accommodate PCI-based single-board computers and announced plans
to establish compatibility testing procedures. The group also plans to
seek de facto standard recognition from the PCI Special Interest Group.

The initial spec is the first in a two-step migration toward a full PCI
passive backplane. It defines as many as four PCI slots, an unlimited
number of ISA slots and has a PCI connector for a single-board computer
underneath the existing ISA connector.

The next generation of the spec now under development could also define
mezzanine and PCI-to-PCI bridge guidelines.
