The following are assorted recent news items from various sources that are
just too small for individual postings...

Here's a new source for concern -- some DRAM modules may have compatibility
problems with some high-end motherboards. The reason is non-DRAM logic
chips used in 9th-bit parity roles, even though they have no memory.
You'll apparently find them on memory module configurations that call for
a 1MB DRAM parity chip: 1MBx3 (30-pin 1MB) and 1MVx36 (72-pin 4MB). These
"cheat sticks" are priced several dollars below current market prices. One
defense is to insist on the DRAM manufacturer name for every chip on a
module.

New version 1.04 firmware for QuickAccess ISDN "modems" is available now on
the AccessWorks BBS: 908-946-2199 (ISDN or analog to 14.4). The update
incorporates a higher compatibility with ISDN products from other
manufacturers, plus a few performance and throughput enhancements. This
"modem" isn't really a modem because ISDN is digital, so there's no analog
signal to modulate. In fact, it incorporates an NT-1 network interface, a
TA terminal adapter, and a Hayes AT command set responder. One step up is
the version with an analog input, so you can plug in a standard telephone
and use the ISDN line as if it were an analog line. The next step up comes
in February, with the addition of a built-in 14.4kbps data/fax analog
modem. So, with one connection to one serial port, your computer can make
or take any kind of analog or ISDN data call, and you can still plug a
phone into the box. Accessworks! Communications Inc, Holmdel, NJ

The new Win/TV Prism card ($299) is $50 less than the Celebrity and a lot
of the features are the same, but there's still room for both. The Prism
supports displays to a maximum 1024x768 (60Hz non-interlaced); for higher
resolution or higher frame rates or life without the VGA feature
connector, the Celebrity series is still the right choice. By the way,
Hauppauge is working with ChildWatch to create a system that uses a Win/TV
Cinema card to capture kids' photos and fingerprints into a database the
FBI will maintain. Hauppauge Computer Works Inc, Hauggauge, NY
