Microtech Revolutionizes Peripherals Market with New Enclosure Technology

EAST HAVEN, CT (January 4, 1995) --- Microtech announced today a completely
new family of mass storage subsystems based on innovative enclosure
technology that represents the culmination of over a year's worth of
design and user input.

Microtech's MicroLynx family of 3.5" disk and tape subsystems represents
the latest in peripheral enclosure advancements. Features such as
interlocking 'lego-style' stackability, LCD and keypad hard drive status,
elimination of internal and external cabling, and optional front removable
devices and power supplies are a few of the features that make the
MicroLynx family the most reliable, serviceable and powerful subsystems
available on the market today.

"Peripheral enclosure technology has not changed significantly in the last
five years," stated Brian Campbell, President. "Meanwhile, PC and
workstation performance has exploded and disk and tape capacities are
doubling nearly every year. Enclosures have just not kept pace. As a
leading manufacturer in the peripherals market, we've changed that with
MicroLynx."

All MicroLynx models use printed circuit cards for internal SCSI and power
distribution rather than cables, thereby eliminating reliability problems
associated with cable length, shielding and connectors. For the same
reasons, external AC and SCSI cables are replaced with modular jumper
blocks. Typical SCSI lengths for MicroLynx can be measured in inches
rather than feet as in existing enclosures. "Cables create most of the
electrical problems in SCSI chains," explained Lou Palumbo, Director of
Engineering and Technical Support. "The MicroLynx design eliminates the
problem at the source."

MicroLynx subsystems are designed to be highly reliable and serviceable,
especially under the performance loads of Fast/Wide SCSI-2 devices.

Each MicroLynx system incorporates Forced Perfect Terminations (FPTs) to
deal with complex cable configurations, the variances in terminating
devices and the variables in the impedances across multiple subsystems.
Each MicroLynx module includes its own 40 watt (20 watt for tape devices)
autosensing power supply, cooling fan and filter, and can be modularly
stacked either horizontally or vertically using a unique interlocking
mechanism .

The MicroLynx family is comprised of disk and tape subsystems in two
price/performance ranges. The fixed disk version features an LCD and
keypad for displaying and setting various subsystem parameters such as
SCSI target ID, power sequencing, and power up/down. The LCD is easily
snapped out and rotated for proper left-to-right display orientation in
both horizontal and vertical stacks. Fast SCSI-2 drives are available in
capacities from 1GB to 4GB; Fast/Wide drives from 1.7GB to 4GB; as well as
8GB DAT.

The MicroLynx removable disk "RD series" features a front removable drive
and power supply for high availability, enhanced portability,
serviceability and security applications. Fast SCSI-2 drives are available
in capacities from 1GB to 4GB; Fast/Wide drives from 1.7GB to 4GB.

Prices vary depending on configuration with delivery starting in early
February.
