Animation Techniques in Win32

New Guide from Microsoft Press Shows How to Create Stunning Animation Using
Microsoft Visual C++ and MFC -- With a Foreword by Charles Petzold

"No programmer for Windows can afford to be ignorant of the techniques
described in these pages." -- From the foreword by Charles Petzold

In ANIMATION TECHNIQUES IN WIN32--a book both informative and fun--Nigel
Thompson, a leading writer in Microsoft's Developer Network Group, shares
his practical secrets for creating stunning 32-bit graphics and animation
with sound.

ANIMATION TECHNIQUES IN WIN32 is an illuminating book that covers the
hard-to-grasp aspects of the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI)
including sprites, device-independent bitmaps (DIBs), and palettes--that
lead to state-of-the-art animation in Windows.

The book is a hands-on exploration of the Windows GDI, a revealing
exhibition of object-oriented software construction, and an indispensable
set of lessons in animation and multimedia related programming. This book
provides all of the information that readers need to create 32-bit,
sprite-based animation on a Win32 platform for recreational, multimedia,
and mainstream business software.

Using the latest object-oriented 32-bit tools in the Microsoft Visual C++
development system, readers will discover how to streamline the process of
creating a graphics engine by using the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC)
to take care of the tasks all applications for Windows have in common.
Readers start with the basics of creating bitmaps and end up creating a
fully animated scene that includes sounds. As the book progresses, readers
develop a set of C++ classes to deal with DIBs, palettes, sprites, and
sounds. The final static-link library on the accompanying CD-ROM is usable
in a wide variety of applications.

Even a C programmer inexperienced with C++ will be able to follow
Thompson's easy writing style and clear code examples. The code, written
to the Win32 API set, demonstrates the possibilities for high performance
in a Visual C++ and MFC application. The CD-ROM contains the book's sample
programs plus other animation programs as well as Author, an animation
authoring program, Win32s 1.2, and demos from the Microsoft Developer
Network Development Library. Developers must have Microsoft Visual C++
version 1.1 or version 2.0 and the Windows NT or Windows 95 operating
systems to use the source code on the CDROM, and are free to use the
book's sample code and Win32s 1.2 in their own work and to modify the
sample code.

Nigel Thompson joined Microsoft in 1989 as a software design engineer in
the Multimedia section of the Windows group. He went on to create the
first sound driver for Windows and later led the development of the system
components of the Level I Multimedia Extensions to Windows. He is
currently a member of the Developer Network Group, where he writes
technical articles.
