Personal computers..... Over 50 million have been sold in the United
states, and thousands are stolen every year and easily resold. A thief's
dream and a police nightmare.... That was the case until now.

January 16, 1995 -- Small in size, usually worth thousands of dollars, they
are easy to steal, a breeze to fence and almost impossible to identify.
Serial number stickers peel off in seconds. To make matters worse computer
thefts are on the rise and new smaller notebook computers are easily
stolen.

Pretty bleak picture.. But wait - aren't these machines pretty "smart?"
What if you could somehow access the "artificial intelligence" of the
computer to identify itself and its rightful owner? What if the computer
could "testify" as to how its valuable components were pieced out?

Now computer theft prevention software is available to individual computer
owners for little or no charge. This is due to the joint efforts of U. S.
and Canadian forensic computer scientists! Previously this software was
only available to law enforcement agencies and corporations. Now computer
owners who use DOS or WINDOWS can acquire the software nation wide from
numerous computer Bulletin Boards and shareware distributors for
essentially the cost of a telephone call or diskette.

MICRO-ID has been made available to law enforcement agencies for
distribution to the public since 1990. It has been well received by the
public in those areas where it was available. It has also been used
successfully by some of the largest corporations in the United States and
Canada. But distribution by law enforcement agencies to the public has
been limited. For obvious reasons, police are much better suited to
recover stolen property than they are to distribute software to the
public. However, in some areas, law enforcement agencies have done well in
this effort.

The release of this new MICRO-ID software version was timed to assist new
computer owners who received computers during the Christmas holiday. As
stated, it is available to individuals for little or no cost! Automated
corporate and campus versions are available for a modest fee. Such fees
help cover development and distribution costs of the program to individual
computer owners.

It works this way: The computer owner runs MICRO-ID, which accesses the
computer and secretly etches the owner's identification deep in the heart
of the computer's hard disk drives. The process is easy, secure and takes
only seconds. Ownership information can then be accessed by police
evidence room managers with a special security program which is only made
available to law enforcement agencies. The cost of the special program is
under $10. Law enforcement, commercial and campus requests for MICRO-ID
should be directed to the publisher, listed above. Public requests for a
listing of software sources should be mailed to the publisher with a
postage paid, pre-addressed envelope. An article about MICRO-ID is also
available upon request.

Individuals who own DOS based microcomputers can obtain the shareware
version of MICRO-ID from the following sources for little or no cost. This
list is valid as of 1-1-95. The shareware version is for individual use.
Other than for evaluation, it's not licensed for commercial, government,
or university use!

Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) offer the download of the files free of charge
via a modem. The only costs involved are usually the long distance phone
charges incurred. The file to be downloaded will typically be named
ID3-2.ZIP (version 3.2 is the latest) and the program PKUNZIP will be
needed to uncompress the files. Users who are unfamiliar with BBS file
download procedures or unfamiliar with PKUNZIP software should avoid using
a BBS to obtain MICRO-ID.

Shareware distributors offer MICRO-ID program disks for a minimal charge
(Under $6.00). These source should be used by new computer owners or
persons who are unfamiliar with BBS downloads. Sources flagged with '*'
are considered priority sources based on price, shareware experience,
phone access, etc. All sources listed have the latest version.
