Community Exploration

An exciting Macintosh CD-ROM program now being offered by Hartley
Courseware is designed for students of any age learning English as a
second language. Community Exploration lets learners explore an American
community, helping them discover names of people, places, and objects.

Students use the mouse to point and click anywhere on a colorful map of a
community. They'll see a word label for the place they've selected, hear
the word, and receive a definition. They can activate an explore feature
to go inside the place and explore even more, discovering close-up views
and new words, as well as observing actions and eavesdropping on exchanges
between different characters inside.

Four different levels with 52 places to explore include a park, the bank, a
fast food restaurant, a house, the police station, a school, the grocery
store, a hospital, and more. Students can even record themselves saying
different words or phrases, and use a notebook feature to type their
thoughts while exploring the community. Parents and teachers can also view
reports on a learner's progress.

Easy-to-understand symbols, sound, and animation make the program fun, and
a wide variety of voices assure that students are exposed to many speaking
styles.

Community Exploration is published by Jostens Home Learning of San Diego,
California.

The program requires an LC series Macintosh or higher, CD-ROM drive,
12-inch color monitor, System 7 or higher, and at least 4 MB of memory (5
MB is recommended). The Windows version requires 3.1 Windows or higher, a
486 processor, a CD-ROM player and a color monitor. The price is $59.00.
