Apple Announces the GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit

Allows Users to Easily Add Telephone, Digital Answering Machine, Fax and
High Speed Modem Capabilities to Power Macintosh and Macintosh AV
Computers

CUPERTINO, California--January 4, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
introduced the GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit, which, for the first time,
allows users to make their computers the focal point for all their
personal communications.

The GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit is an all-in-one solution that provides
intelligent, full-duplex speaker phone capabilities; a single source of
voice messages, fax and email; and a high speed (14,400 bps) send and
receive fax modem. Unlike existing products which require customers to
assemble separate hardware components, each designed for a specific use,
the GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit is designed to seamlessly integrate
computer and telephone capabilities.

"Customers are interested in reducing the duplication and complexity in
their lives," said Rick Shriner, vice president of the Apple Core
Technologies Group. "They want the most important tools on their
desks--the computer and telephone--to work together as a focused source
for communications. At Apple, we continue to strive to make the user
experience as easy, yet as powerful as possible. The GeoPort Telecom
Adapter Kit will help users bridge the gap between computers and phones to
make communicating and collaborating easier and more productive."

The Kit includes GeoPort Telecom Adapter hardware, Apple Telecom 2.0
software, Cypress Research Corporation's MegaPhone screen-based telephone
software and Aladdin Systems' SITcomm Special Edition communications
software. Apple plans to make the Kit available in the U.S. and selected
markets in February, 1995.

The GeoPort Telecom Adapter, which allows connection to an analog telephone
line, takes advantage of Apple's GeoPort architecture. GeoPort is an
emerging architectural standard which allows computer users to communicate
and collaborate over a single line no matter what kind of telephone line
or computer is being used.

The Kit also represents a significant building block for the creation of
solutions based on the Macintosh Telephony Architecture (MTA). It supports
telephony-aware Macintosh applications and allows customers to incorporate
off-the-shelf applications to create complete telephony systems. Third
party developers will be able to take advantage of the included system
software components to build compelling new MTA-based telephony
applications.

The First Completely Integrated Computer and Telephone Solution The GeoPort
Telecom Adapter Kit includes:

- A full-duplex speakerphone which provides high quality sound and allows
natural conversations --unlike conventional speakerphones that block
dialogue when more than one person tries to speak at the same time. This
capability is available for users with a system microphone.

- A screen-based telephone application that delivers full support of the
telephony capabilities of the Apple Telecom 2.0 software, including
support for dialing from a graphical keypad, copying and pasting telephone
numbers, and dragging and dropping business card information. The Kit also
includes a free 30-day trial of call logging, PowerDial Dialing Manager,
intelligent synchronization with directory information (e.g., saving
telephone numbers to a PowerTalk catalog), and other extended
capabilities. These optional features may be purchased at any time for
$49.95.

- Integration with database and Personal Information Management software
which allows users to take advantage of existing databases to place and
track contacts and telephone calls. For example, a salesperson can dial a
prospect's telephone number through their computer while looking at the
prospect's profile stored in their database.

- A digital answering machine that includes a toll-saving feature. The Kit
also provides an intelligent auto-answer capability that differentiates
between incoming voice, fax and data calls.

- Integration with PowerTalk and QuickDraw GX technologies. With the
PowerTalk universal mailbox, a user can make the computer the focal point
of voice, fax and email messages. He can access these different types of
messages by going to one quick and easy-to-use source. Through the
PowerTalk mailer, the leading Macintosh productivity applications support
sending documents to multiple destinations including fax, online services
and LAN-based email.

Easy Software Upgrades

Because GeoPort Telecom Adapter capabilities are software-based, users can
easily add these new features to their existing GeoPort Telecom Adapters
as they become available. Users will be able to install Apple Telecom 2.0
and MegaPhone software which will be available free of charge via various
online services including the Internet, AppleLink , and e-World . The
upgrade software and manuals can also be acquired for a nominal fee
through a toll-free number.

The new Apple Telecom 2.0 modem and fax software are also available as an
upgrade to existing Express Modem customers.

Suggested retail pricing for the GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit will be set
individually by Apple authorized retailers.
