HOUSTON, January 30, 1995 -- Continuing its quest to provide customers with
the industry's best value in notebook computing, Compaq Computer
Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced the addition of two new models to
its award-winning Compaq Contura family of notebook computers.

"The new Contura 410C and the 410CX notebooks provide our customers with an
even broader array of notebook computing options," said Hugh Barnes,
senior vice president and general manager, Compaq Portable PC Division.
"With larger drives, faster processors and new super-fast PCMCIA modem
cards, these Contura notebooks offer superb functionality, portability and
value in an easy-to-use and carry form factor."

With its 8.4-inch color TFT display, an Intel 486DX2/50 microprocessor and
a 350 MB hard drive, the Contura 410CX provides customers with features
not typically found on value line notebook products. Customers will find
this new model in their dealers channels starting at less than $2,999.
(NOTE 1)

Priced at $2,499 (NOTE 1), the Contura 410C offers customers a 9.5-inch
Advanced Passive Matrix color display, an Intel 486DX2/50 microprocessor
and a 350 MB hard drive.

All models of the Contura family feature an industry-standard NiMH battery
that lasts 3.5 to 5.5 hours in typical use; a status panel showing current
battery life and other notebook conditions; two PCMCIA slots for enhanced
functionality and communications capability; and 4 MB of memory
(upgradable to 20 MB). A large center-mounted matte trackball just below
the space bar allows users to keep their hands on the keyboard as they use
the pointing device.

Weighing just 5.9 pounds, both the Contura 410C and the 410CX are
substantially lighter than the 6.5 to 7-pound competitive products in the
same full-function notebook category. And with the detachable handle found
on all of the Contura 400 notebook family, these portable computers are as
easy to carry as they are to use.

Like the previously announced products in the Contura 400 family, the two
new notebooks come standard with pre-installed Microsoft DOS 6.2, Windows
3.1, Lotus Organizer, TabWorks, and On-Line Documentation & Tutorials.

The new Compaq Contura 410CX and the Contura 410C began shipping to dealers
worldwide earlier this month.

New PCMCIA Modem Options

Compaq also announced today three new PCMCIA modems: the Compaq 288 Fax
Modem, the SpeedPaq 192 Fax Modem, and the Compaq 192 Fax Modem, each with
a five-year limited warranty.

With a blazing speed of 28,800 bps and priced at only $369 (NOTE 1) the
Compaq 288 PCMCIA Type II fax modem is perfect for portable customers with
a heavy demand for graphics and file transfer environments. The new Compaq
288 Fax Modem supports data transfer at 28,800 bps (V.34) and up to
115,200 bps with compression, and 14,400 bps for fax transmissions.

The SpeedPaq 192 Fax Modem, priced at $279 (NOTE 1), offers customers
excellent flexibility since it can be used with either a standard or
cellular phone line. With its Cellular Phone Manager, customers can also
easily setup and control the functions of their cellular phone, and can
even use name and telephone number lists from Personal Information
Managers such as Lotus Organizer. With a speed of 19,200 bps, this new
model offers advanced error control protocols (MNP10 and ETC), which
insure smooth and sustained connections, even under adverse conditions.
The new modem also supports the MNP-10 and ETC protocols, as well as
cellular connections on Motorola, Nokia, Technophone and GE/Ericsson
cellular phones.

For the budget-minded customer, the new Compaq 192 fax modem, priced at
$179 (NOTE 1), is designed exclusively for Compaq notebooks using Windows
environments. After an initial installation, customers simply plug the
modem into their Compaq notebook card slot, and it's ready to go with no
rebooting necessary. With its special power-saving features, the Compaq
192 PCMCIA fax modem offers customers the lowest power requirement in the
industry.

Compaq now supports more than 170 PCMCIA modem cards from vendors
worldwide.
