Apple Reduces On-line Charges for eWorld, Outlines Electronic Mail Agents
and Expanded Internet Support, Expands Management Team

CUPERTINO, California--January 4, 1995--eWorld, the on-line service of
Apple Computer Inc., entered the New Year running today with a series of
announcements designed to accelerate the service's market acceptance, give
eWorld users greater access to the Internet, and add strength to its
management ranks. Specifically, eWorld announced it is cutting nearly in
half the hourly cost of the service and doubling the number of hours
included in the monthly fee in the United States and Canada. Additionally,
eWorld outlined the capabilities for the next version of its operating
release, which is expected to be available this spring. The new release
intends to include Internet support, more multimedia capabilities, and an
electronic mail agent that allows users to automatically filter and better
manage incoming mail. And finally, eWorld named two key Apple veterans to
lead its marketing programs and advanced technology teams.

eWorld was launched six months ago and is characterized by comprehensive
on-line computer support from Apple Computer, a growing range of on-line
publishers, and a distinct interface which makes it easy and safe for
people to navigate through on-line information and discussion. Since
November, eWorld has been bundled with most PowerBook and Performa
Macintosh systems. Since launching in July, the service has garnered more
than 50,000 new users (paying accounts). Apple intends to migrate the
additional 60,000 users of the company's AppleLink service to eWorld
throughout 1995.

"Momentum for eWorld is growing," said Peter Friedman, vice president and
general manager of Apple Online Services. "We have passed through the
initial ramp phase of the service. Now we expect to hit stride in the new
year with aggressive pricing, more publishers and much broader bundling
with Macintosh products."

To enable eWorld to aggressively grow as the market continues to boom,
Apple has reduced the hourly charge in the US and Canada to $2.95, down
from $4.95, and has doubled the hours subscribers receive for the monthly
$8.95 fee to four hours. International pricing is $9.95 a month and
includes one hour. For additional hours, beyond the first hour, the
international rate is $9.95.

The new version of the eWorld operating system, due in spring, aims to
enhance the service's ease of use and communication capabilities. New
features expected to be included are:

- Easy access from eWorld to Internet information that will include
UseNet groups, FTP file servers, and popular mailing lists.
- A versatile electronic mail agent that allows users to filter
incoming mail and automatically respond, save, forward or delete.
- Expanded network connections that make it easier to connect with
  eWorld anywhere on the globe.
- Faster access to eWorld through support of 14.4 kpbs high speed
  modems--at no additional cost.
- New multimedia features will make it easier for members and
publishers to display and work with graphic files for a richer
  on-line experience.
- New text-to-speech technology that lets people actually hear
  on-line conferences.
- TCP/Internet transport.

* Editor's Note:

These services are expected to be available in the spring release of eWorld
1.1, although some features will be available sooner.

These additional functions will enable members to explore eWorld's
ever-growing number of publishers. Since its launch last July, eWorld has
attracted many new on-line publishers--now more than 170-- including many
that are unique to eWorld.

Recently, for example, eWorld added a number of new publishers that appeal
to key markets such as learning--for children and adults, education, news,
and entertainment. Most recent publishers include RSP Funding Focus
(financial assistance information), The Online Bookstore, UPI News You Can
Use, Reuters/VARIETY Entertainment Report, Apple Global Education,
TimeMachine (a history database, global statistics and famous quotes),
eWorld Educator Connection, and ImaginEngine (on-line detective games),
and Blackberry Creek (an on- line creative center for kids 7-13).

Also added to the service recently are a host of forums about specific
personal, cultural and professional interests ranging from the African
American Information Network, the Film and Video Emporium, the Martial
Arts forum, Virtual Chef's Cookery and a special forum for kids and teens
called Youth Central.

In addition, eWorld has expanded its management team by naming Lawrence G.
Tesler, presently Apple's chief scientist, to lead eWorld's advanced
technology team. Previously, Tesler served as a vice president for Apple's
Advanced Technology Group and the Lisa , Macintosh and Newton product
divisions. Also joining eWorld's senior management is Christopher Escher,
most recently Apple's director of public relations, to lead eWorld's
worldwide marketing programs group.

Tesler, who joined Apple in 1980 after seven years with the Xerox Palo Alto
Research Center (PARC), is a renowned industry leader and visionary. As
eWorld's chief technology officer, he will be responsible for leading the
integration of next generation interactive technology into eWorld.

"Larry and Christopher are top-notch Apple veterans and will add immensely
to eWorld's ability to create and market new interactive products for the
on-line services market," Friedman said. "They are in tune with consumer
needs and both have a history of being very creative thinkers and strong
leaders."

eWorld is a powerful, yet easy-to-use, global family of on-line services
from Apple Computer, Inc., which include eWorld for Macintosh and
NewtonMail --eWorld's messaging service for Newton personal digital
assistants. Included on most Apple Macintosh computers, the software is
also available free to all U.S. Macintosh users by calling 1-800-775-4556.
eWorld is available in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New
Zealand. eWorld for Windows-based personal computers is expected to be
available in 1995.
