Apple Introduces Windows Client Software for AppleShare and AppleSearch

Workgroup Servers from Apple now offer a low-cost, easy-to-use cross-
platform solution

SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 4, 1995--As part of its ongoing strategy
to provide superior cross-platform solutions, Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced plans to include--at no additional cost to customers--Windows
client software with its Workgroup Servers. The AppleShare Client for
Windows, which allows Windows users to access AppleTalk -based file and
print services, will be included with all of its Workgroup Servers, making
them a low-cost, easy-to-use cross-platform solution. Apple also
introduced the AppleSearch Client for Windows, which will be included in
the lastest version to its text search and retrieval software--
AppleSearch v1.5.

"This brings even greater value to our Workgroup Server line," said Jim
Groff, vice president and general manager for Apple Business Systems.
"Apple's Workgroup Servers now provide an easy to use and affordable
cross-platform solution for mixed environment LANs on top of the superior
performance already provided by the PowerPC platform."

Both the AppleShare and AppleSearch Client for Windows software products
are designed to give Windows users an inexpensive and easy way to connect
to AppleTalk-based LANs with the same computing look- and-feel of standard
Windows network application programs. Both of the products provide
customers in mixed workgroups--those using Apple Macintosh personal
computers and Windows-based PCs--the ability to access information and
work together over a network with the same ease-of-use that has always
been available for Macintosh networks.

The new Windows client software will provide support for current Windows
versions 3.1, 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Windows client
software will also be available to current Workgroup Server, AppleShare
and AppleSearch customers. In the future, Apple also plans to develop
Windows client support for its Apple Remote Access and PowerShare
Collaboration Server software products, in addition to supporting future
versions of Windows, including Windows95.

Windows Clients for Apple Services

The AppleShare Client for Windows is an inexpensive way to add Windows
users to AppleShare-based workgroup networks. Using the AppleShare Client
for Windows, Windows users can connect to AppleShare file servers and
networked printers. Once connected, Windows users will be able to
manipulate files, directories, privileges and connections in the same way
as their Macintosh counterparts. "This is a first-class Windows
application developed with the Windows customer in mind," said Doug
McLean, director of marketing for Apple Business Systems.

The Windows Client for AppleSearch is a low-cost solution to give Windows
users access to the advanced text search and retrieval capabilities of
AppleSearch v1.5, including the capability to search information stored on
local-area network (LAN) servers, on-line information databases or over
the Internet.

Both software products are fully compatible with 80386, 80486 and Pentium
processor-based PC computers with at least 4MB of RAM and an Ethernet
network adapter card using an ODI (Open Datalink Interface) or NDIS 3.0
(Network Device Interface Specification) driver. The AppleShare Client for
Windows can connect to all existing versions of AppleShare, including
AppleShare 3, 4 and Pro. It also connects to Mac OS file sharing and
third-party AFP (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) servers.

Windows AppleTalk Stack

Included in the AppleShare Client for Windows product is the Windows
AppleTalk Protocol Stack, co-developed by Apple and Miramar Systems Inc.
of Santa Barbara, California. The new stack, based on a 32-bit Windows
Virtual Device Driver (VxD) architecture, is designed for fast throughput
and low memory consumption. "Where other implementations of AppleTalk
running under ODI can require up to 100k of RAM, the Windows AppleTalk
stack only requires 30k of RAM," said Neal Rabin, president of Miramar.

The Windows AppleTalk Protocol Stack will enable independent software
developers (ISVs) of database, e-mail, scheduling and other network
services to develop cross-platform versions of their applications. Several
developers, including ACI US Inc., Dantz Development Corp, Everyware
Development Corp., HELIOS Software GmbH, and SoftArc Inc., are currently
evaluating the Windows AppleTalk Protocol Stack. According to Dominique
Hermsdorff, vice president of engineering for ACI: "It's our intention to
implement the Windows AppleTalk stack in a future version of our 4D Server
Windows client."

Availability and Pricing

Both the AppleShare and AppleSearch Client for Windows software products
are expected to be available in the U.S. by the end of February 1995.
