Access.bus Becomes Royalty Free

The license to make computers and peripherals with the Access.bus now is
available royalty-free. Access.bus, developed by Philips Semiconductors,
Eidenhoven, the Netherlands, is an I/O communications standard that
permits up to 125 peripherals to be connected to the same PC without
typical installation and configuration hassles. Most of the installation
and configuration is handled by software. The bus is hot-pluggable --
peripherals can be plugged and unplugged without powering down the system.
The catch is that Philips requires system manufacturers to sign a license
agreement to assure that Access.bus is used according to the prescribed
specification. Philips will retain the rights to the Inter-Integrated
Circuit bus, upon which Access.bus is based. For more information, contact
Philips Semiconductors in the U.S. at 800-447-1500 or at +31 40 72 20 91
in the Netherlands.
