VERSANT RELEASES INDUSTRY-LEADING OBJECT DATABASE FOR IBM's OS/2 2.1

New Product Supplements Client- Server Offerings

Menlo Park, Calif. - December 20, 1994 - Versant Object Technology
Corporation (Versant), provider of the VERSANT ODBMS, the leading object
database management system for multi-user distributed applications, today
announced general availability of its database system on IBM's OS/2
version 2.1. This new offering supplements the industry's most complete
object database offering for general purpose platforms.

"Our support for the OS/2 operating system is helping customers create
competitive advantage across a variety of industries," said David Kellogg,
vice president of marketing at Versant. "Customers are taking advantage of
lower-cost platforms while gaining the benefits of fully utilizing an
object paradigm."

Several of Versant's corporate customers, including Sprint and Blue
Cross/Blue Shield (BSCA) have embraced OS/2 as a key platform for
development and deployment purposes. With VERSANT able to support remote
disconnected databases, one customer uses VERSANT and OS/2 on laptops and
allows users to connect and utilize the corporate VERSANT database as
needed. Customers are also using the power of VERSANT and of OS/2 to
balance workloads efficiently across clients and servers.

The VERSANT ODBMS is a high performance, client/server database management
system designed to support today's critical applications in markets like
telecom-munications, utilities, transportation, and corporate MIS. VERSANT
eliminates the need for joins and maps objects directly into the database.
Because of this, VERSANT provides users with levels of concurrency and
performance often 10 times that of the fastest relational technology.
VERSANT has been named the top performing ODBMS by both the University of
Wisconsin and by the British consulting group, ButlerBloor. VERSANT is the
only leading DBMS to support both C++ and Smalltalk.

The new OS/2 operating system with 32-bit processing supports the complete
functionality of the VERSANT ODBMS. OS/2 can be used as both server and
client platforms. Critically, OS/2 systems are fully interoperable with
other Versant platforms across heterogeneous networks.

Versant Object Technology is the industry's leading provider of object
database management systems (ODBMS) for multi-user, distributed
environments. Versant offers the industry's most complete product line
including the VERSANT ODBMS, application development and database
administration tools, programming language interfaces to both C++ and
Smalltalk, SQL-based legacy data integration, and a family of support
services. Versant products reduce the cost of creating complex
applications, and enable the development of next-generation applications
that are difficult or impossible to build using traditional database
management technologies. Versant customers include Ameritech, British
Telecom, Fujitsu, IBM, MCI, Nippon Steel, Panasonic, Sprint, Telecom
Australia, Texaco, Volkswagen and many other companies worldwide.
