ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY TO STANDARDIZE ON SYBASE

Sybase's Client/Server Database and Interoperability Software Central to
University's Information Technology Strategy

EMERYVILLE, CA, December 22, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Arizona State University (ASU)
has chosen SYBASE client/server software as the standard for its
relational database implementation, which includes existing mainframe
databases and new client/server-based databases. ASU selected Sybase's SQL
Server 10, OmniSQL Gateway, Open Server, and Replication Server products
that will play pivotal roles in providing interoperability to existing
heterogeneous mainframe databases and improving information access. ASU is
ranked as the nation's fifth largest university, providing educational
services to more than 45,000 students and professionals.

"We were impressed with the comprehensive approach Sybase has taken in
addressing interoperability, which enables us to gather information from
multiple, heterogeneous databases and make it easily accessible to users,"
stated Dr. William Lewis, vice provost for information technology at ASU.
"As we migrate to newer technologies, SYBASE enables us to leverage legacy
systems and data, smoothly and cost-effectively, while improving
information access to meet the growing needs of our users."

ASU wants to make its centralized databases more accessible to its users,
but its current systems lack critical interoperability solutions to
provide a link between mainframe and client/server technologies.
Alternatively, moving legacy data off the mainframe was not a practical
solution for ASU. With Sybase software, the Information Technology (IT)
department was able to expand data availability beyond the mainframe into
departments throughout its campuses.

"Arizona State University's approach to leveraging legacy systems and data
demonstrates an integral need for solutions that support interoperability
across heterogeneous platforms and databases," stated Richard Yanowitch,
vice president of corporate marketing at Sybase. "Its decision to choose
SYBASE as the backbone for its new computing environment demonstrates that
Sybase's database and interoperability solutions meet the university's
needs to integrate existing mainframe data with newer relational data."

Why ASU Selected Sybase

During its evaluation, ASU narrowed its selection to three vendors
including Oracle, Informix, and Sybase. Ultimately, ASU found the SYBASE
family of products offered the most comprehensive interoperability
solutions and technically superior software. Sybase's stored procedures
technology will allow ASU to safely embed its business rules within SQL
Server 10, where users can only reference but not modify the rules. ASU's
IT department can improve its productivity by writing commonly used
functions and transactions into stored procedures for faster processing.

Benefits ASU Expects To Gain

Using SQL Server 10 and SYBASE interoperability solutions, ASU will be able
to extend data access throughout its campuses and expand system support
quickly to meet peak demand periods, which take place the week prior to
classes beginning, the first week of classes, and the periods when
financial aid disbursements occur. As the university expands its
application portfolio, it will be able to offer students a broader range
of user-friendly services such as touch-tone technology, which already
allows ASU students to enroll in classes, check grades, pay student fees,
and check class availability via telephone instead of in person.

Sybase Solutions Provide Interoperability and Data Accessibility

Using SQL Server 10 and OmniSQL Gateway, ASU can tie into DB2 and IDMS
mainframe data, extract the data, and download it to their data warehouse.
Administrative staff and users can query the data warehouse and receive
personnel, financial, and student information immediately. Sybase's Open
Server will soon work in conjunction with Kerberos, a commonly used
UNIX-based security system, to protect sensitive information within the
data warehouse. With Replication Server, ASU will be able to distribute
real-time copies of key administrative application databases.

The SQL Server 10 client/server database will serve as the backbone for the
university's new computing environment. OmniSQL Gateway, an enterprise
client/server gateway, will provide completely transparent distributed
processing among heterogeneous databases. Open Server is an application
program interface (API) that integrates non-SYBASE data, applications and
application services. Replication Server manages multiple data copies for
corporate-wide locations, providing reliable delivery of data and
transactions in a distributed environment.

Migrating Off the Mainframe

ASU is migrating segments of its mainframe database and applications to a
client/server platform. Among the first applications to be deployed are a
constituent and an affiliate application, currently in development, that
track information about students, employees, vendors, donors, and other
affiliates. A 14 gigabyte student information application will be migrated
over a two-to-four year period. In an effort to offer users more timely
services on less expensive platforms, ASU has already begun to move pieces
of this application to a Sun server running SQL Server 10. Eventually the
new applications accessing data in Sybase's SQL Servers will support up to
1,500 concurrent Macintosh or PC users. The front-end tools that will be
used to build and access the new applications include Texas Instrument's
IEF development tool, Powersoft's PowerBuilder, Microsoft Access and Brio
Technology's DataPrism.
